Very cool idea indeed. The bar is full of retro arcade machines and consoles. Machines include Time Crisis, Street Fighter, the Simpsons and Space Invaders. Consoles include a Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and a Super Nintendo! There are also many board games to choose from that are free to play. The consoles are free to play too but be prepared to wait as they are next to tables that are always usually occupied. The arcade machines are only $1 per go which is great value. And there’s no charging up a card, just use a coin like in the good old days! There’s a bar and kitchen and the food looked good although we didn’t try it. Although when we ordered drinks the bar staff were friendly and helpful. Please go and support this place if you’re looking for a night out. Sydney needs more people like this who make an effort to make fun in our lives. God knows Sydney needs more venues who promote fun after the lock out laws and the oversupply of basic ‘alcohol only’ bars! Atheist this place tries something new!

This place definitely has a fun atmosphere, but is lacking on a few key customer service areas. The arcade games and the massive range of craft beers make it an easy place to meet up with friends, but these attributes feel a little gimmicky, especially given that the staff don't really know anything about the beers or have any suggestions or recommendations. The old movie posters and nostalgic decor make it a fun place for millennials to reminisce. I think this joint might make a good place for a first date, as they have lots of things to keep you occupied, like boardgames, cards and video games, in the event that you become stuck for conversation topics. The food menu is really limited, but they do have vegan and GF options. The food quality isn't great, but I don't suppose that's why people go here. My advice: don't eat here. Its expensive and of low quality. There are many other places you can go on King Street, for less money and better food. Good range of beers though, and it's got a cool vibe.

This bar has an amazing vibe and appeals to all ages. The selection of games was very well thoughtout, they had all the names that would come to mind even if you weren't born in the 80s. It's quite big as well, there are several rooms on both floors full of machines. The staff are friendly, the deal is that you buy a beer along with some coins. Each game is $1. They even have a Mega drive with Sonic the Hedgehog at one of the tables. My only suggestion would be about having some more convenient places to put your beer while playing the games. That said many people just hang out at the tables around the bright lights and sound of the machines . Had a really amazing time. It's a great place to take your friends to see something totally different, definitely recommended.

Got there little after 8.30pm on a Friday night - surprisingly wasn't too crowded. Arcade Machines didn't have lines, so didn't have to wait to play the games we wanted to try. Make sure to bring $1 coins as that's how you operate to play the machines, otherwise you can easily exchange at the bar. There wasn't much hot food on the menu, so the staff were kind enough to let us bring pizza from next door to eat!! I'll definitely be back to try out the board games and spend more time trying to beat the high scores to some of my favourite arcade machines.

Love the retro vibes of this place and the arcade games are great - point blank I enjoyed especially and was overjoyed when I saw they had it. The space is cramped though, it’s packed out which I could understand why, but I hope they move to a bigger location in order to fit in the people and the games more comfortably. Board games are also provided but as there weren’t any spare tables, my friends and I stuck with the arcade games instead. Didn’t stick around for food though as it was too packed.

How fun is this?! 1989 is an arcade bar in Newtown, located on the Main Street. It’s got cocktails from your fave zooper doopers, all the way to cocopops…!! With 37 arcade games including pinball, street fighter and Tetris. What we ordered! * Boozey cocopops 🥣 * Boozey Zooper dooper 🧊 We had an amazing night out! Highly recommend if you’re looking to elevate your next games night to a whole new level 🎮
