The lake is situated at an elevation of approximately 2,030 m, covers an area of about 1.4 square km and has a total storage capacity of around 9 million cubic meters of water.

Local folklore speaks of a village called Galtür that once thrived in the valley now submerged by the waters of Silvretta Stausee. According to the legend, the villagers were warned by an old hermit about an impending disaster. Ignoring the warning, they continued their daily lives until a massive storm struck, leading to the construction of the dam.
