I strongly endorse previous positive comments - this museum is really excellent, and well worth seeking out. The collection of buildings, assembled over the last 50 years, is first rate and extremely well displayed in a beautiful setting. One has to pinch oneself to remember that, idyllic though this all seems now, the lives depicted were harsh and extremely tough, with disease, poverty and stress ever present. The information at the site - from notice boards and an excellent downloadable app - is clear and very helpful. But the same can’t be said of the website, which looks pretty but doesn’t give enough information about visiting. One particular gap on the day we went was catering - the Wirtshaus was closed (no apology offered, or prior info on the website) and all we could get during a 3 hour visit was coffee from an automat. Not really good enough for such a big site some distance from any other eating options. Best to...
Read moreThis Tyrolean open-air museum is located between Innsbruck and Kufstein and has been founded in 1974. The place is really big and you can walk through the old farms without even realizing that you are in a museum. Visiting the houses and the old farms is an amazing experience and is quite educational as well. The museum has been renovated with some interesting interactive video stories that explain some of the aspects of the life at the time. Walking through the park can take few hours especially if you want to have a look inside the farms too. It's quite recommend if the weather is nice and a visit with children will make them happy as they can enjoy the nature. Don't forget to visit the restaurant wich is really good. By the way, from time to time they have exhibitions: today for example there was the medieval time rehearsal with people walking around with typical costumes and working on old lost jobs....
Read moreA fantastic day out with plenty of education. Free with the Alpbachtal card. English translations of the map were not available/for sale, but not needed. The free downloadable app has everything, with over 1 hour of recorded audio history lesson and explanation. Topics include history, farming, medicine, religion, education and society. Additionally, my wife and I explored more slowly leaving our older children with free organised craft activities, supervised with excellent staff. This might have only been available on the Friday we visited?? We went there on a sunny day and it was very quiet, most people will have been in the mountains. Getting there was awkward, we walked from Kramsach, nearly 5km, a pleasant walk along the road. Two different sources had given incorrect bus information. This museum is on the 621 bus route that directly serves Brixlegg bus station! Easy getting...
