What a large nut. My friend Simon said that he has seen (produced?) bigger, but that’s a tall order. As a competitor to the other world’s largest burl, this one competes in the same weight class, however it doesn’t have the same gravitas. Perhaps it is the fact that this one is hidden off to the side, placed awkwardly in a car park? Seems disrespectful for a lump of wood with such a reputation. Nevertheless, this burly bit of tree deserves your attention when you visit Port McNeill. My feedback to burl management is that a bit of varnish wouldn’t go amiss, and perhaps a relocation to a more prominent spot of honour in...

Fun tourist trap item to say that you have seen, without all the tourist trap store stuff, in fact there really is nothing else around except the town. Tucked away off a small road with little to bring your attention to it. If a car was parked in front of it you may miss it. I do not know who the lovely lady was that was posing for her friends, but I needed a size reference in the photo. Thanks. This thing is big. Found it on the way to the Broughton Strait...

The burl is unique as is something really special as a logging town. If you are into natural oddities this is an awesome sight to see. The burl doesn't have too much around it as it is located in the community hall parking lot, but it has a covering and small plaque talking about it. The museum when it is open again is a great place to see more about the...

So it’s the “worlds largest burl”. When you go to this place you think why is this place in the over flow parking lot. No big to do about??. Usual touristy trappings doesn’t exit here. Why doesn’t Port McNeil make it a “something” it’s so so rare. It’s tough to explain.

Some sites report this as closed, but it is open for it's a roadside attraction. An interesting site with some good history BUT don't expect much as the burl has been covered in fiberglass to protect it... so you don't get the full affect if a true burl.
