Auvers-sur-Oise Cemetery — Attraction in Pontoise

Oct 2014--My wife and I stayed in Paris for 5 nights and took day trips from our B&B Cote Montmartre on Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle in Montmartre district. One of our trips was from Gare St. Lazare connecting in Pontoise, arriving in Auvers sur Oise at mid-AM. We ate brunch across from the station and walked past the church to the cimetiere exclusively to see Van Gogh's grave. Before entry, one can see the fields to the west and south of the cimetiere which were featured in Vincent's last paintings. One can also walk through those fields from the cimetiere back to town. Auvers-sur-Oise cemetery is a typical but, with one exception, an unremarkable French communal cemetery. That exception is, of course, that it is the final resting place of Vincent van Gogh and his brother Théo.

There are several other artists buried here, but the majority of people only visit for van Gogh.

O Trigal que Vincent escreveu a Théo, seu irmão, dizendo que representava sua tristeza e extrema solidão já estava ceifado. Foi ali que ocorreu o acidente com a arma de fogo que o levou à morte. Em frente, está o cemitério municipal, onde foi enterrado em 1890. . Seis meses após sua morte, Théo veio a falecer e, posteriormente, seus restos mortais foram colocados em um túmulo ao lado do seu. O filho do Dr. Gachet, médico e amigo de Vincent, retirou uma muda da era da casa do seu pai e plantou entre os túmulos, unindo-os, selando a amizade entre os irmãos e também entre Vincent e Gachet.

Um cemitério é um local sagrado, ainda que você não tenha religião. Então procure fazer silêncio e manter a discrição enquanto estiver nele. Se puder, leve uma flor para colocar no túmulo e faça uma oração pela alma do túmulo que foi visitar e pelos que ali repousam.
