This was my first time in Greece, and truth be told, I planned my entire trip around my visit to this museum. I am a classically trained musician working on a project related to Greek mythology. I attended the museum tour and hands-on lyre workshop, and was deeply impressed with the expertise of the staff. From the lyre making process, to ancient music theory, to playing the lyre itself, Seikilo was ready to answer every question I had. No matter your level of familiarity with music, I believe Seikilo will be able to tailor the experience to your needs. Going to Seikilo is a must if you are passionate about music, history, or Greek mythology - or if you are looking for an experience that is truly one of a kind. The staff are attentive and welcoming, and made the visit one of the highlights of my year.
Without planning much, we arrived at the museum hoping we could just walk in. Only then did we realise that we needed a reservation before - two minutes into the conversation the guide mentioned he would be willing to start early. We were a small group of 4 people guided through the upstairs museum. The guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate (as his father as built the instruments on display, and he records/performs them) and it was a real pleasure to spend the hour with him learning about the instruments. Fotis (who was behind the counter) is extremely knowledgeable too and we spent a while taking about music theory and the current research into Ancient Greek music. I wish it was longer, and can only highly recommend! Added points for being able to play the instruments
It was very interesting and intriguing to hear about where the ancient music came from. They gave us information as well as presentation in the form of a real show in the different lyres. In the end we even got to play ourselves and it was an amazingly beautiful experience. In my experience I was on the moon. Great place for a date or even a family.

An eye-opening and inspiring experience!

I learned so much during my visit to the Seikilo Museum. Lina was incredibly warm, knowledgeable, and engaging — she answered all of the questions with such enthusiasm. I also had the pleasure of meeting Theodoros, whose family&team’s dedication to preserving ancient Greek music is truly admirable.

The mechanical differences between the instruments were absolutely mind-blowing — something you really have to see in person to fully appreciate!

It’s clear that Theodoros and his family, along with the talented musicians and staff, pour their hearts into keeping the rich musical heritage of ancient Greece alive. I was thrilled to learn that they also travel the world to perform at concerts and cultural events.

A truly unforgettable and...

We attended a tour of the space, which includes the history of lyres which is known through imagery and ancient writings, and we took part in the lyre workshop. Lina was incredible, and taught us the history of the workspace, the family who created all of the present instruments, the history of musical notation in ancient greek texts, and many great details about the lyres themselves. Lina is a trained musician and led our small group through basic exercises on individual lyres and we even created and performed small pieces for the group. It was really one of the most fun, interactive museum experiences that we have had in a while and I highly recommend this exhibit and tour to anyone who is interested in ancient Greek history, music, and a hands-on experience. Thank you, Lina...
