Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is a fascinating archaeological site located just outside the town of Sligo, Ireland. The cemetery is believed to be one of the oldest and largest megalithic sites in Europe, dating back over 5,000 years to the Neolithic period.

The cemetery consists of over 60 megalithic tombs, or dolmens, arranged in a circular pattern across the landscape. Visitors can explore the tombs, which are made of large stones and were used to inter the remains of the dead.

In addition to the tombs, Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is also home to a visitor center, which provides information on the history and archaeology of the site. The center features interactive exhibits, artifacts, and a video presentation, offering visitors a fascinating insight into the lives of the people who built and used the tombs.

The cemetery is located in a beautiful natural setting, surrounded by rolling hills and stunning views of the nearby Atlantic coast. Visitors can take a guided tour of the site, or explore on their own using the provided map.

Overall, Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in archaeology, history, or Irish culture. Its fascinating megalithic tombs, stunning natural setting, and informative visitor center make it a truly...

I couldn't believe the reception I got from a member of staff here, if you have ever visited this place you will know there is two parts to it one across the road from another. When we went we crossed over the road from the car park and began to walk around until a member of staff appeared and said abruptly tickets please! We turned around and said we hadn't got them yet and we thought we could have a look at the smaller area first before walking over to buy are tickets for what we thought was the main area! The staff member said no we have to buy tickets and then told us we were trespassing on the land!!!! I couldn't believe it. There was nothing on around to tell us we needed to buy tickets first before viewing this ground with a few rocks on it!! In my opinion the staff member could have approached us and just told us that we needed to buy tickets first before we could view the area. But instead he told us we were trespassing and ushered us off the land. Needless to say we were not happy and decided that this was not a place we wanted to spend our money. So be aware when you visit and park the car do jot venture across the road first. You must purchase a ticket or you will be trespassing on the land!!! Terrible treatment...

Carrowmore is the largest and and one of the most important megalithic sites in Europe and can be found in the County Sligo.

You can reach the cemetery easily by car and park right in front, before you head on inside. Once you paid for your ticket you can either join a tour or head out on your own (if you want to, accompanied by an DinA4 sheet filled with information, for which you have to leave a deposit behind) – or check out the small exhibition right to the left of the booth.

Outside there are two aread for you to explore – the one behind the booth and the one across the street. There are small paths that will lead you from tomb to tomb. Most are not really big and you basically don’t see more than a couple of stones – but for those interested in this part of Ireland’s history, this...

A fantastic collection of old tombs from the Neolithic Era. This is the oldest of the four large Neolithic cemeteries in Ireland. There are a collection of stone circle tombs. They can be accessed via a visitor centre. The price is five euro entry for an adult and the tour is self-guided. The complex is the oldest and the simplest of the four, and the tombs are not as structurally impressive as Newgrange or Knowth. But the place has a great charm, and the setting is very beautiful, with Benbulbin and Knocknarea visible from the tombs. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in Stone Age history.

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery in County Sligo is considered one of the “big four” sites of megalithic sites in Ireland, together with Carrowkeel, Loughcrew Cairns and Brú na Bóinne. Carrowmore is the largest megalithic burial ground in Ireland. There are several stone circles on the side of the road opposite the visitor center. The large passage tombs, several dolmens and stone circles are on the same side as the visitor center. The top of the large passage is missing so that visitors can see the ground plan of the tomb. Unfortunately, ugly chicken wire is used to hold the stones in place.
