Church of Saint Mary Immaculate 'all'Esquilino' — Attraction in Rome

Such a beautiful church. Shame about the priest. This church was local to me on my most recent visit to Rome and as my return flight wasn’t until 4 I had a free morning on my last day so saved my local church’s til then. I had no idea what was on the inside so I was blown away by the neo gothic style as that is my ultimate favourite style. I think the neo gothics did it even better than the gothics but obv that’s a matter of opinion. It was 9:50 and mass was happening so I put my phone away and sat at the back and listened to the service in Italian. I’m not a catholic or even a Christian so obv I didn’t go up to get the wafer thing. I thought it would finish at 10 but the service went on til 20 past. I didn’t mind waiting but as soon as he had stopped speaking he went into a back room and turned all the bloody lights off! I’m sure he knew I was a tourist and did that for my benefit because of the way he spoke to me later. After he stopped speaking he went to turn the lights off and was dashing about the church doing whatever it is that priests do. I was wandering round looking at the art and I’d smiled at him a couple times as I passed him but didn’t get any response. I got round to the left side of the altar and saw the priest (now dressed in his normal clothes) sitting in a room off to the side speaking on the phone. There was a couple of high spotlights still on pointed at the alter so with the little bit of light I decided to try n take a few pics but as I did I stepped back and up the step that leads to the alter from the side. At that point the priest came out of the room where he was speaking on the phone, saw me taking my photo and started tsk tsk tsking at me really loud and aggressive while clicking his fingers at me and then pointing at the floor like i was a dog that was misbehaving. I was so shocked to be treated like that by a priest that I left soon after. I thought it was cz he didn’t want tourists in his church (which I do get, it must be annoying sometimes) but I’m super respectful and I don’t actually think that was it cz as I left the priest is talking and laughing very animatedly with a man with a backpack who I’m sure was also a tourist, tho a catholic one cz he did go up for the wafer. So did I get treated like that cz I didn’t go up for the wafer? I thought I was being respectful by staying seated. Or was it cz I’m a woman? English? I didn’t get it at all and it actually really upset me cz on my 6th trip to Rome and having been inside at least half the church’s in the city, this was my last church of my latest trip and I honestly sat there thinking that it was the most beautiful church I’d ever been in and then the priest started singing and I wondered how one man could make such a beautiful sound without any instruments. So ye, my experience was completely ruined by the priest and his terrible attitude. I’m not going to go as far as to say he ruined my whole trip but he certainly tainted it. I hope he gets to read this cz maybe it will encourage him to be kinder to people in future. You can ruin someone’s day or even their entire holiday by being unnecessarily mean to them and priests really should know better. Why be nasty to a random person who’s done nothing to you? As I said I’m not a Christian but I would never treat someone like that. If someone smiles at me I will smile back no matter what kind of mood I’m in. I’d love to give this church 5 stars cz the building is worth 5 stars. If the pre raphelites did church’s, this is what they would look like

Una esperienza meravigliosa, quasi mistica, che consiglio a chiunque si trovi in zona e voglia assaporare l'emozione di un tuffo nel nord-Europa di mezzo millennio fa, o poco meno....ma anche l'esperienza di entrare in uno dei set di Harry Potter visto che l'interno di questa chiesa ricorda molto le atmosfere un po' gotiche del film. Eh sì perché lo stile di questa piccola ma possente chiesetta è proprio il neogotico e ne è una delle massime espressioni in Roma (assieme al cd "piccolo duomo di Milano" del lungotevere, col quale compete per suggestione, NdR). A pochi passi da Viale Manzoni e da Piazza Vittorio (quindi la raggiungete con cinque minuti di camminata dalla metro A) sorge stretta in un isolato, bianca candida, ad angolo e con due torri campanarie basse ai lati. Questo ricercato edificio è la risultante di una sintonia fra tutti coloro che hanno partecipato a realizzarla tra il 1896 e il 1914: sto parlando dell'ispiratore (San Ludovico da Casoria), dell'ideatore (padre Bonaventura Maresca), del progettista (l'architetto Antonio Curri), il direttore dei lavori (l'ingegner Luigi Cortesi) per poi terminare con le pittrici (Gina Baldracchini e Clelia Argentati), gli scultori, i vetrai e le maestranze che sono subentrate nelle fasi di costruzione della chiesa oltre ovviamente ai frati bigi che in un modo o nell’altro hanno partecipato alla realizzazione dell’opera. Proprio per questo motivo viene conosciuta anche come "chiesa delle Pittrici" riconoscendo il grande valore delle due artiste che l'hanno decorata, usando una tecnica particolare a secco, che ha usato le proteine delle uova come legante. Consacrata molto dopo, solo nel 1942, fu tenuta appunto dai padri Bigi poi sciolti nel 1973 e da allora dipende dalla parrocchia di San Marcellino e San Pietro in Laterano, poco distante. Anche questa chiesa sfruttò lo spazio sopra la volta per ospitare e nascondere alcuni ebrei durante l'occupazione nazista. E' un trionfo di guglie, dipinti, vetrate, mosaici, decori e i giochi di luce che si formano attraverso le colonne e le cappelle messe in mezzo alle navate sono veramente impressionanti. Qualcosa di simile si può vedere nel villino Douhet a Prati. Purtroppo il restauro è stato solo esterno ma forse è un bene perché l'atmosfera di vissuto e di intimo che si respira dentro è molto mistica. Assolutamente da visitare se siete in zona. Utili info? La chiesa è in stile '800(?) e non male si presenta in modo trascurato dai suoi predecessori ché pur non essendone colpevoli chiedono spesso ( i preti che la custodiscono ) di essere aiutati per rimetterla in sesto con elemosine un po' più cospicue come fecero diversi anni fa : se non ci fosse un prete che a dir suo IO serei "un santo " perché chiedo sempre di ricevere la particola, cioè l'ostia, sulla bocca ed è per questo che non sembra essere un sant'uomo; naturalmente non è colpa sua e nemmeno mia, poiché ci sono delle regole da rispettare dettate dal governo in comunione con la chiesa specialmente in un momento così delicato in cui vige la paura del covid-19, ma per me la cosa più importante è, e non per ribellione, ma per un fatto di credo profondo. Ma non è questo che mi si chiede ora ma un giudizio su come è l'istituto religioso cioè la chiesa dedicata alla VVSS MARIA sita in via Emanuele Filiberto sul fianco destro dell'incrocio con il Viale Manzoni

¹ Esternamente è meravigliosa in quanto vi è l'immagine, ovvero il busto della VV SS MARIA,, sormontata da arccate in stile 800centesco (?) e delle colonne in rilievo sui bordi, una breve scalinata ( composta da 3 o 4 scalini con tanto di corrimano in metallo ) di cui come entrata ci sono tre porte una centrale grande che s'affaccia sulla navata e due laterali semplici con incastonati dei vetri elaborati di colore giallo non sgargiante, anzi direi più sul bruno, perciò intonate allo stile della chiesa

² l'interno è buio come vuole la tradizione cristiana ma illuminato da una serie di luci - lampade -

³ sul fianco sinistro della navata c'è una rientranzza ove vi sono statue di santi e di cui non ricordo il nome ⁴ sempre su questo lato, la sagrestia e un angolo dove è posto il confessionale

⁵ l'altare principale è messo frontale al pubblico con un'altro offerto da fedeli e anch'esso addobbato da due ceri

⁶ la balaustra divisoria, ove sino a molti anni fa i cattolici si inginocchiavano per ricevere le la comunione

⁷ tutt'intorno e sullo " sfondo " ci sono immagini di santi più o meno importanti e o conosciuti

⁸ sul fianco destro dell'altare maggiore ci sono immagini di alcuni altri santi, come ad esempio San Pio da Pietrelcina ed altri

Nell'insieme questo luogo di culto è meraviglioso ma come detto all'inizio è angusto e buio
