We had an okay stay at Hakone Nanase, we stayed for 2 nights during which we had also breakfast and dinner. We checked the reviews before and saw that some were complaining of outdated/moldy rooms. Our room was indeed outdated, but everything was very clean, functional, the beds were comfortable, and therefore we felt good in our room. The hotel in itself if outdated, with dim lights and an onsen that shows its age, although clean. The dinner and breakfast are Japanese style and very tasty. The chef accommodated my dietary restrictions, which I am very grateful for! However, the times of dinner and breakfast was super fixed: 18:30 and 8:00. We were okay with the dinner time, but the breakfast time felt a bit anti-holiday for us. On the first morning, we failed to show up and by 8:10 we got a call in the room that breakfast is waiting for us. This was a bit disturbing at first, but we showed up to breakfast and understood that everything is pre-cooked for guests, with set menus. This is not a continental style, and therefore to avoid waste, you need to eat your breakfast or tell them in advance to not prepare it. The breakfast was Japanese style, so bear in mind if you’re not ready for a full course of a fatty fish-rice, clam soup and pickles at 8 am. For European standards, that felt more like a lunch than breakfast. All in all, we had a relaxing stay.

I absolutely loved this hotel. The room was big and included an entrance area with a mini-bar and amenities, a lounge room with tatami and a traditional Japanese seating area, a king-size bed, a spacious bathroom and a private onsen. I enjoyed every moment of our private onsen; despite the very hot July weather, it was still relaxing to bathe in hot water after a long day. The hotel also has family onsens available for hourly occupancy and a public onsen as well; on the same level, there is a relaxing lounge as well with a coffee and vending machine. The hotel is filled with beautiful art pieces and historical furniture. All amenities were provided in the room, including skin care products. Beware that reaching this facility by public transport is very difficult: it is situated on top of a steep road, and there are very few taxis available in Hakone (which need to be booked up to days in advance); additionally, there are no restaurants around. Free parking is available. I did not eat at the restaurant as I didn't book in advance but the service and menu looked wonderful. Wish I had stayed longer!!

Had a perfect stay here. Incredible hospitality - they greeted us at the door, helped us through all our transportations for the next day, were very considerate about our dinner and our breakfast, showed us to our rooms and explained everything thoroughly. Provided yukatas for us in the room and slippers. Would highly highly recommend this stay to anyone looking for a relaxing stay with a private onsen. The granite onsen was so fabulous we used it again in the morning before our early departure. Very reasonable price for the value. Beautiful wide windows that open to a view of greenery and the river. A little tricky to get here, but it's right off the bus line if you are able to catch one.

This place is pricey if you want the private bath like we did and as it shows on the website the rooms are luxury. But they are not as the pictures show, very deceiving!! Bathroom is full of mould and needs maintenance. One sink was clogged with shaved hair when we arrived. There are no substitute options for meals. Location and staff are great but does not make up for the disappointment

Very friendly staff, smooth communication the entire way. Helped us forwarding our luggage to the next hotel and had their shuttle dropped us off at the Kowakudani station, which was extremely helpful! The room was great, and the private onsen with a view of the mountain was just perfect. If I were to return to Hakone one day I’d definitely stay here again.
