I was a student at ASIJ for a little over two years, graduating in 1957! there were 33 of us in the graduating class ; about half of us were Americans, followed by Chinese, Shanghai Brits and a smattering from all over. Japanese were not allowed , except for rare exceptions. in those days the school was in Meguro, and was usually referred to as Meguro. The school fled to Chofu in the early 1960s and no doubt did well on the sale of its very large piece of property. Unfortunately, the level of teaching was not good at least in the upper school, and there was a nasty battle going on between an 'old guard' teacher and some of the new staff. the school had a pretty useless board headed by a pretty user4less guy who was the local honcho of the largest U.S. bank in Japan. The students, of course, sided with the old guard and popular math teacher. two of the 'new guard' fled back to the States during my senior year. One was an English teacher. We liked to say that she left on a midnight flight. the year book was dedicated to the 'old guard' teacher. Such were the good old days at Meguro. There were 1,000 kids in the school then; it hasn't grown that much. The class of '57 probably marked the nadir of its long existence, I hope. And I hope by now - 61 years later - it is a real school with real teachers and a offering a real education. Btw, I applied to and was accepted by an Ivy League college, at least partly because I had lived and gone to school in a foreign country. I was woefully unprepared! when I wrote this i had not yet read about the appalling scandal that began a few years later, and was not acknowledged by the school until it was recently forced to do so. instead of moving to Chofu, far better that it had just closed its doors.
