Located in Datai Bay area, Temurun is a three tier Waterfall and the cumulative drop of the falls is about 200 meters. This is the tallest waterfall in Langkawi. The water stream flows down the northern slope of  Mount Mat Cincang. The rocks here comprises mainly of sandstone & shale, and is over 500 million years old.

From the car park at the main road, the first tier is only a short distance away (about 5 minutes walk). The paved walk way is quite romantic and through the rain forest of Mount Mat Cincang. It's a gradual way up although some steps are steeper than the others. There is a railing on one side in most parts of the path way. Along the way there are several gazebos to take rest and soak in the nature all around.

One thing you will surely find are the macaque monkeys in plenty, all along up to the upper tier of the falls. But don't feed them. They are wild and can get aggressive if you try to feed them (because they may expect more) or disturb them. Otherwise they are usually harmless.

You will also find many butterflies, birds and small animals like squirrels along the way. Often the locals come to this place for picnics. The gazebos with seating arrangements are ideal for that. That is when you may find the place getting dirty with plastic bottles, packets and wastes thrown all around. This happens more because of the monkeys joining the party.

Walkway through the forest

Once you reach the uppermost tier, that is where you get your true reward. You can see the waterfall coming down the steep rocky slope of the mountain and forming a beautiful natural pool at the base with clean and clear water. The pool is shallow but deep enough for a bath or a swim. I have seen local boys even jumping from the adjoining cliff into the pool. You can also stand right below the water stream and feel the water splashing on your body.

With the rocky cliffs surrounding the pool, it's overall a magnificent setting. The drop in the top tier would be about 30 meters. However there is no marked trail to go further up to the top of the waterfall from the pool at the uppermost tier.

One thing to remember... this is a seasonal fall. You will actually enjoy the true gush of the water during the rainy season (September - October). During the other months, if there is a run of continuous dry days, then it's better to avoid it if you are expecting the stream in full flow. However on most days you will still see a thin water stream flowing down.

Entry & Timings

Entry is free and you can visit Temurun Waterfall anytime during the day time.

Facilities

There are hardly any facilities here other than few gazebos at various points including at the top. There is a car park below. Just opposite to the car park and on the other side of the road, there is a small open air restaurant 3-Tiga serving great Malay food at cheap prices. But it usually runs only during the high season and remains closed most other time. The Pebble Beach is located on the other side of the road.

Location & How to Reach

Temurun Waterfall is located in Datai Area in north western end of the island and on the road Jalan Datai. It would be about halfway between the Crocodile Farm and The Datai Resort and located about 42kms from Kuah Town. You will need to hire a taxi or take a rental car to come here. Pay waiting charge and keep the taxi waiting, otherwise you won't get...

Temurun Waterfall, located in the Mat Cincang Nature Park on the northwestern side of Langkawi, Malaysia, is the tallest waterfall on the island, boasting an impressive cascade from a height of approximately 200 meters. The site is relatively easy to reach by car, with a parking area conveniently nearby. From the parking lot, it’s a short hike along a well-marked path to the waterfall. The trail includes some steps, which are manageable for most visitors, although the last 50 meters require a bit more caution as the steps become steep and slippery.

We visited the waterfall during the rainy season in August, following two days of heavy rain, when the water flow was at its peak. The waterfall was truly spectacular, with so much spray that we got drenched just standing nearby. The setting is beautifully serene, nestled within the rainforest, and we appreciated that it wasn’t overly crowded, allowing for a more tranquil and immersive experience. The picturesque surroundings also made it an ideal spot for photography.

However, there are some downsides to consider. While the path to the waterfall is well-maintained, the facilities at the site are quite limited. There are no proper restrooms, changing areas, or food stalls, which could be inconvenient for some visitors. Additionally, we noticed some litter in the forest, which detracted from the natural beauty of the area. Given its location in the rainforest, mosquitoes and other insects can be a nuisance, so bringing insect repellent is highly recommended.

It’s also worth noting that the waterfall is rather remote, located on the other side of the island, which may require a longer drive depending on where you’re staying. As mentioned, the rocks around the waterfall and in the pools can be very slippery, so it’s important to exercise caution when walking near the water.

Overall, Temurun Waterfall offers a stunning natural experience, particularly during the rainy season, but be prepared for the limited amenities, the remote location, and the need to tread carefully on the...

A Natural Oasis: Temurun Waterfall Nestled in the lush landscapes of Langkawi, Temurun Waterfall stands as a testament to nature's artistry. The cascading waters create a symphony of sounds that soothe the soul, while the cool mist offers a refreshing respite from the tropical heat. The trek to the waterfall is an adventure in itself, with a slightly challenging path that adds to the excitement of the journey. Upon arrival, the sight of the waterfall is a rewarding experience, with its majestic flow creating a serene ambiance perfect for relaxation and reflection. While the waterfall's flow may vary with the seasons, its beauty remains a constant allure. It's important to visit during the wet season to see it in its full glory. As a visitor, I also appreciate the efforts to keep the area clean and urge everyone to contribute to preserving this natural wonder. Temurun Waterfall is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place where one can connect with nature and find a moment of peace away from the bustling world. A must-visit for anyone exploring Langkawi.

We visited Temurun Waterfall with high hopes, especially since we were traveling with our kids and looking forward to a refreshing swim in nature. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations. While the natural surroundings have potential, the site itself is poorly maintained. The public toilets were in terrible condition, with an overwhelming smell that made them unusable. Even more concerning was the amount of garbage scattered around, which not only spoiled the scenery but also attracted swarms of mosquitoes. The kids were uncomfortable almost immediately and asked to leave not long after we arrived. We genuinely wanted to enjoy the spot as a family, but the lack of cleanliness and maintenance made it hard to stay, let alone relax or swim. Temurun Waterfall could be a beautiful natural attraction, but as it stands, it’s not family-friendly and in serious need of care and upkeep. Hopefully, local communities will step in to restore its potential, but for now, we wouldn’t recommend it for families with young children.
