Would have been a perfect experience IF I was White or Hispanic. But sadly I was the “Asian” who was maybe not right to be there - at least for the one guy? Such racism ruined my experience.
The singer, Claudia, was wonderful. She was not only skilled but also had this great power and energy which fascinated me. I could see that she truly LOVES fado and I could feel so many diverse feelings (anger, sorrow, hope, strength, and love) all indulged in each song. In several moments of the music I certainly cried - and she was crying too. The reception lady Ema turned out to be a great fado singer too which was a pleasant surprise.
However, the Portuguese guitarist - named Manuel, from what I remember - ruined my experience here. Before the start of the show he asked everybody where they’re from as a small chat - EXCEPT FOR ME, THE ONLY ASIAN GIRL IN THE ROOM! I was right next to him and I could see him intentionally ignoring my stare🤪 That was plain rude and inappropriate. This kind of micro-aggression lurks into your mind and hinders your concentrations and feelings on the show itself, which is really saddening.
If he really loves the Portuguese culture and music, he should not inhibit people of different skin color from enjoying it. I hope he someday grows up to be a real man and learn not to be a shame of his own country.
Ooh and one thing really funny; during the show he mentioned a fado song about “feeling alienated” which he was actually inflicting on me right at...
Read moreThe location shown on Google Map was not accurate and even some shop owners around where Google Map points at as the venue told us to go back down instead of walking up further (we had to walk up about 40-50 meters further to see a sign on your left before the entrance). The Uber driver also dropped us off quite a distance away from the place and we ended up walking for 15-20 mins to find it. Because of all these combined with terrible traffic jam in the old town and our first Uber driver's cancellation of the booking at the last minute caused us to be about 30 mins late...
Read moreIntimate setting with less than 20 in audience and every seat taken. Warm and engaging performers and performance was breathtaking and moving. Simply outstanding musicians and vocalist. In addition, audience treated to an excellent presentation of the origins of nuances of fado and instruments. I would strongly recommend this experience to anyone considering a fado performance. A highlight of my...
