100 life-size bronze statues called The Long March to Freedom can be viewed just outside Canal Walk Shopping Centre at Century City in Cape Town.

It provides a centre of learning about the freedom struggles and highlights the phenomenal skills of the artists, sculptors and casting foundries. One walks on Astroturf among the life-size figures of legends and stalwarts. Panels provide the description of how the person contributed to the story of South Africa.

The exhibition aims to bring the liberation legacy of South Africa to the people. It needs the support of visitors because has suffered the decline of visitor numbers and a shrinking in funding in the last 2 ½ years. When we visited the entrance fee was R 10 for SA citizens.

We were informed that at the moment it will be a travelling exhibition in order for other places and people of South Africa to have the opportunity to visit the statues in their area of residence.

There is amble parking right next to the entrance, and it is wheel chair accessible. One should take 2 - 4 hours of time depending on how much of the information on the panels you want to read.

One is welcome to take photos and selfies.

Visited Long March to Freedom in Cape Town and it was an excellent experience. The location is inspiring and very well laid out, offering a deep and moving insight into South Africa’s history and the struggle for freedom. The sculptures representing different periods of South Africa’s history are outstanding – powerful, detailed, and really bring the stories to life.

The exhibits are informative, engaging, and thoughtfully presented, making it easy to understand the significance of each moment in history. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, happy to answer questions and provide additional context where needed. The atmosphere is respectful and reflective, yet welcoming, making it suitable for all ages.

Overall, a must-visit if you’re in Cape Town. I left feeling both educated and inspired – a truly memorable experience that I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about South Africa’s...

The Long Walk to Freedom tour was an incredible and meaningful experience. The tour focuses on the historical South African figures who helped shape the country and fought for freedom and justice. It was both powerful and deeply inspiring. Our guide truly made the experience unforgettable. He was extremely funny and engaging, which made the tour enjoyable from start to finish. At the same time, he shared so many amazing facts, stories, and historical moments that really brought the history to life. What stood out most was how insightful the tour was. Hearing about the sacrifices, struggles, and courage of the people who fought for our freedom gave me a much deeper appreciation for our country and its history. It was inspiring to learn how much people endured and how hard they fought for justice and equality. This tour is not only educational but also...

Long March to Freedom is an amazing and deeply enriching experience. Learning about South Africa’s political history through the life-size bronze statues is incredibly powerful—it genuinely feels like these historical figures come to life for a moment. The self-guided tour is easy to follow and thoughtfully laid out, starting at the back with the 17th century and moving forward through time until 1994 at the front of the field. It’s immersive, well-curated, and a must-see for anyone wanting a meaningful understanding of the country’s journey to democracy.
