I have been to a high tea at Galadari and also countless Dinner Buffets. Atmosphere and Ambience: Good seating area, fairly crowded some weekends and also for high teas. And there is a band playing in the weekends and its quite a nice feel to have dinner while enjoying the music. However, in terms of seating area being open and space, there is a lack of privacy specially when enjoying dinner and having conversations with friends, family or loved ones as the tables are all in close proximity. If your a big family and tends to have a attention grabbing laughter, or are loud with conversations it tends to cause a disturbance to the ones seated next to you, so 6/10 for the ambience and atmosphere. Something needs to be done about this thou. Food and Beverage: If you visit for a high tea or dinner, the food is served in buffet style hosting various cuisines both continental and inter-continental. You will also encounter a live action station or two. And there is an entire room set up for desserts. In context of the taste and quality of the food i would give them 4/10. This is one of the most oldest and well known hotels seated at the heart of colombo and when we pay high prices to enjoy a meal we expect the food quality and taste to be nothing short of exquisite and delicious. The food tends to sometimes taste bland and many times i encountered the food to be abit cold and lacks that warmath you expect. I cannot personally say the food was over the top as there were way too many common varities that we eat every day. In terms of competition among other 4 star colombo hotels, Galadari in this sense have alot of catching up to do. Also the food lacks in variety. Maybe increase in variety and diversity which will cater to many differing taste palets, specially in the continental section rather than serving dhal and rice. Sometimes foreigners tend to visit our buffets to get a taste of 'Sri lankan' food and only to have them be served with dhal and rice is rather nothing short of disappointment. Galadari needs to be BOLD with their menu. The dessert on the other and all taste the same. I kind of noted that the same dessert is served with differnt textures, colours and decorated differently. This is unfair and it reduces the diversity of desserts available because we are basically eating the same thing with different sizes and textures. I once encountered sugar pieces in a tart i was having. These things need to be fixed. And for desserts i would give a 4/10. For the price we pay, I'm assured people look for rather uncommon desserts to enjoy. Staff and Service: I will only give a 3/10 for their staff and service. Although the staff can be all smiles, sometimes we have to call them 4 different times to re-fill the water glasses or to send us some forks. Once we have the food and go for a second plate, we have to wait for quite sometime for someone to come and clean off the plates from the table. And they also never excuse themselves when re-filling water and it can come off as quite rude and abrasive specially when your in the middle of a conversation. So mind the etiquette there. And when you walk in to sign in, you must wait for someone to come and sign your reservation in and show the table. I found the reception near the Coffee shop inside where we have dinner to be empty many times without anyone there to assit you to your table. Overall good experience but lost to improve on the basis of food, service and seating setting.

Galadari, the 1st hotel we checked in on the day we arrived to Sri Lanka the very 1st time. After check in procedure, the bell boys, not 1 but 2 of them insisted to carry our cases, we have 1 big case and a cabin size case. Did not think much, since they are so “helpful” insisted to carry our cases to our room. After get to our room, not that we didn’t know what they were expecting, so we looking for some money to tip them. We just touched down to the land we never been before, don’t really used to the Sri Lanka rupee notes yet, without thinking, I found a 100 and a 50 (the rest are 1000 and 5000), handed to them, but they both reaction was “interesting”, they looking at us, that was it! That I realised why, so I say to them we don’t have small money, and then one of them responded: < I see 1000, that is like USD 3>, at that point, I was absolutely stoned, still try to process what we have heard. From there, without any choices, we got to give them 1000 each, for their “kindness to help”. Short after they left our room, then we realised, why they have TWO bell boys followed us to our room. We understand about the existence of tipping culture, specially towards FOREIGNER tourists, but this experience, plus the following experiences in other hotels we stay afterwards in Sri Lanka, it is not pleasant. The experience with the 2 bellboys at this hotel, it make us feel being “robbed”, can not be worse, it is the 1st impression for us about Sri Lanka, who the 1st time visiting Sri Lanka. Everything else, Room is nice, swimming pool is very nice too for cooling down on the hot day. But have to admit, the staying experiences has been ruined because the NOT GENUINE hospitality service to assist their guests, consequences, we were not comfortable even just want to get some drinking water from the staff, worry that they would stood at our room door refuse to leave without receiving tips. Tipping is a gesture to show appreciation, but not by force.

This hotel was an extremely disappointing experience given that our expectations with it were higher. Right from the start, it was apparent that this hotel is '5 Star' in name only. The check in was a tedious affair with the guy at the reception taking his own sweet time and being quite curt and rude while talking. There were no smiles and he'd rather talk looking down on to his screen than address me directly. Either he didn't deem me to be good enough or there was some serious lack of customer relations training. All that though was just a minor snafu when compared to what was waiting when we entered the room. The air within both the rooms that we'd booked for the night was stale and pungent. An extremely old looking carpet was caked with dirt. Everything there was begging to be replaced and renovated. The icing on the cake were a couple of cockroaches which peeked from underneath the bathroom mirrors and scared the bejeezus out of my wife. The only saving grace was the food at the restaurant. The wait staff was professional and the food was also very good. Not enough to salvage the 5 star tag though. We'll never again choose this hotel again if and when we ever visit Colombo again.

The High Tea buffet offering at Galadari Hotel has a wide range of food options ranging from savory to sweet, along with various beverages including tea selections, hot and cold coffee, fruit juices, and punches. The taste of the food surpassed expectations.
