My very first time visiting this place. The pavilions and picnic area are off limits for parents and kids. Unless your child is enrolled in summer camp, there is not much of a space for you to sit and have a snack with your children. I went to sugar sand park and the science building next door today, before taking off I was looking for a table to sit outside to give my 10 month old baby and 5 year old daughters a snack. We noticed the first pavilion had all the tables full with signs that it was reserved for summer camp students. Fine. We walked to the second pavilion and only 2 tables out of 6-7 of them had the signs and other parents like me were sitting there as well with their children so we decided to join them. 5 mins after we sat the others were done and left again to the park…soon after 5-10 kids max were arriving and sitting down for lunch in the nearby tables accompanied with adults that I assume are counselors, immediately one man approached me and said: “I’m sorry, you can’t be sitting here, this is reserved for sugar sand camp” I honestly thought these were available since I saw others sitting down and I didn’t see a sign in them. I quickly apologized but since I was in the middle of feeding both of my girls, I asked if I could have a few more mins to finish with the girls, pack up and leave. He changed his tone fast enough and said for safety and security reasons I had to leave right away since it’s their policy and I am a threat to the summer camp kids and If I didn’t comply right away then…. he gave me a look and pretty much had me filling in the blanks in my head. I felt so embarrassed that I was stumbling around with all my stuff. I asked him where I could sit since it’s so hot and humid plus it seemed a dark cloud was approaching from the other side, he said either go to my car or there are 2-3 benches at the front, he walked to the other side to show me and told me there they are: The benches that had bird poop and if you sit there you might experience burn in your legs from how hot they were and temperatures are so high. I felt defeated so I decided to just completely leave home and call the number in the website. The lady on the phone wasn’t helpful either. I was met with complete silence after retelling my story and she told me either the benches too or just eat inside the playground which confuse me since there are signs that says not food allowed. Overall the playground is nice and so it’s the small museum of science next door but it definitely should have an area for snacks for visitors not just for the ones who are paying money to their organization. I guess that’s how nowadays everything works- all depends where you fall in the food chain. I completely understood why I needed to move and leave, I just think the delivery was rude and unnecessary. A simple: I wish I could allow you to stay longer but due to our summer camp rules I must ask you to move, I am sorry for doing this to you and your girls. Please take a second to gather your family and stuff. I appreciate your help, understanding and support of our policies”. Compassion and empathy goes long ways. His wording was not nice especially when my eldest daughter understood what was transpiring. She knew he was not only kicking us out but threatening to call security or the cops. She’s extremely smart for a 5 year old and understands things that other kids her age...
Read moreMy daughter grew up being taken to this park. I have so many memories and pictures of her playing here through the years. They have a multi tiered climbing structure, slides, swings, spray mister, and a bone pit to dig in. I was recently at the dentist up the street and having heard that the playground had recently gotten a 1.5 million dollar renovation I wanted to swing by and take a look. It is so wonderful. It is everything my daughter had but upgraded and better. The climbing structure has been improved from splinter giving wood and is now even a little wider so parents can fit in and chase after their kids better. The playground has been redesigned to improve access for children with disabilities. The water spray area has also been upgraded with new misters.
In addition to the playground there is also a merry go round for only $1 a ride. I remember when it was installed and it instantly became a favorite. When I was here there was also some food carts like a hot dog one in this area for anyone wanting to get a snack.
If you get too hot playing outside there is the Science Explorium in the air conditioned building. It houses different traveling exhibits. When my daughter was young you could freely wander in and explore. When I peeked inside this time there was someone manning the suggested donation booth of $5 outside the door. It seemed to add to the pressure to donate before going in but you do not have to give.
The Willow Theater hosts films and live theater productions like magic shows and plays throughout the year. In addition to the shows many fun events are held throughout the year. One of my favorites was always the Halloween Spooktacular which includes a haunted house and film fest. They hold a contest for budding filmmakers to make a horror movie. My daughter won her age group one year with The Clown Woods. They also hold a snow day when they bring in snow for the kids to play in. Activities are discounted for Boca Raton residents but any one can register. Events are listed on their web site, sent via email if you sign up, and there are flyers inside the building.
This has to be one of the best free/inexpensive things you can do with young children in this area. I think this place is good for kids up to age 12. This is the perfect place to coax kids off their digital devices and out into the sunshine for fun and exercise. I hope the next generation of kids enjoys it as...
