The Oakland Temple is a wonderful place to visit whether or not you are a member of the church. Most times I go to enjoy the terrace on the second level above the courtyard reflecting pool just in front if the temple through the front gates. The stairs are not visible from the iron gates at the from by the reflecting pool. You must walk to the back and turn to see the stone stairway. No worries, non members are also allowed to go up the stairs and enjoy the peaceful yet majestic views of the Bay Area. While the holidays are festive and fun, I prefer to visit here and enjoy solitude while I reflect on life. Most times there is almost no one up there.My wife and I did get married in December in the chapel next to the temple. As she is not a member, she is Buddhist, we got married in the chapel versus the temple itself. I am a member of the church. Alternatively, most people know only members which have a permission slip (recommend) can go inside the temple building, not the chapel, itself. The other buildings, the InterStake Center (has two chapels, basketball courts and a large performance center) and the Visitor Center (upstairs for teaching about the church and eternal families / downstairs for genealogy and family history research) is completely open and free to everyone. The genealogy center is connected to the powerful database of the church globally. I love this temple and all temples that spot our land. They bring class and beauty to our valley. They represent a place of peace and rest from worldly cares that sometimes become so overwhelming. If you are having a bad day, I would invite you to go up to this temple and just sit outside of its beautiful walls and just feel the peace and love of the Lord that he has for you. Sure you can feel that anywhere, but especially here. I am sad when people miss the true beauty of this edifice. I can see beauty in all beautiful things even if they are not my beliefs, come on good is good, no matter how you look at it. I feel sorry when people miss out on the good this building brings to us. We are all blessed to have such a place in our mists. I love a beautiful Catholic Cathedral, or a pretty church with a cross on it.
