I loved the kindness and atmosphere I received at Essence but, I’m a little disappointed with my Silk Press. I went there last week for a silk press and a hair cut and Herbert/Cruz took care of me. He was so kind and offered great tips on how to better moisturize my hair. I was able to see an immediate difference after he shampooed and conditioned my hair. The reason why I’m not giving 5 stars is because parts are my hair are severely heat damaged now that the silk press has worn off. I should have known sooner that there was a problem since it’s been hot and humid all week and my hair only started to revert back to its natural 4c texture in some place while other places remain bone straight. After washing and deep conditioning my hair on my own at home and seeing that my curl pattern hadn’t reverted, I started to worry that maybe they mixed a relaxer in the shampoo they used on me. I’m still not sure if my hair was partially relaxed or if it is heat damage. Either way I’m definitely disappointed especially since I gave a generous tip for the care and service

It’s been about 3 weeks since the silk press and my hair still has not fully reverted back to it’s original texture. I’ve tried the Olaplex 3 just like the salon response recommended as well as Olaplex 4 and 5 as directed by the product line on the bottle. Nothing has worked and I don’t know what else to try. I can only conclude that my hair has suffered permanent heat damage. I can’t help but to attribute the damage to the stylist not using enough protectant while pressing my hair as well as using too high of a heat on the irons. I really wanted to support and leave a positive review for this salon but the fact that my hair has suffered permanent damage is making it hard to do so. I visited Essence VIP in Chicago, January of 2018. My stylist was Herbert and healthy hair consultant was Terez Zeigler (owner). I was immediately greeted with a smile as soon as I walked through the door. I had spoken with Mrs. Zeigler over the phone and just from hearing everything that I was going through with my hair, she instinctively knew what the issue was. After seeing my hair she had reassured me that my hair wasn't really that bad. Wasn't that bad? Let me tell you how my hair felt. Like the straw of a broom. You could hold me upside down and sweep the floor and my hair would catch all the dust and cheerios on the floor. It was stiff, DRY, dull, lifeless and don't get me started on the shedding, ridiculous to say the least. I really thought I would have to cut all my hair off. I have been transitioning for 4 almost 5 years and the knots and tangles from the split, permed ends seemed never ending. But they said it's not bad. I was sure my hair was terrible because that's how it felt. But Herbert and Miss Zeigler knew not to judge a book by its cover. Their knowledge of hair health was impressive and made me feel very comfortable. I knew I was in good hands. The products they use are top notch. A product that can actually remove mineral deposits on the hair from hard water? Never even knew that existed until I went here. I received a scalp wellness treatment, a much needed trim and a silk press (I think that's what it's called). It should be called that because that is how my hair felt when he was done! I am very, very grateful for the knowledge, time and care I received by Mr. Herbert and Mrs. Zeigler. I will definitely be back. And I would recommend them to anyone seeking knowledge and in need of real hair health care. Thank you...

Terez and her staff are simply amazing!!! I first scheduled a consultation with her because I have been struggling with my dry, natural hair with the Chicago weather. As a LA transplant, I didn't know where I could go to get my hair back into shape. Terez was so patient and listened to my concerns. I am very active and exercise daily, so my hair was being bombarded with sweat and salt. She was compassionate and very honest letting me know that a relaxer would be the best way to maintain my style without further damaging my hair with constant high heat. She also addressed my premature grey hair and suggested using it to my advantage to highlight my dark hair. Finally, the short haircut I opted for came out sooo beautiful!! Terez took her time and shaped the haircut for my face. I also like all of the precautions she has taken to safely administer her services during COVID-19. She and her staff were wearing masks, did not seat clients next to each other and all seats or items touched by anyone was sprayed and disinfected for the next person to use. She and her staff are so pleasant, friendly and such a joy to laugh with!!! The ambience is great and I love the African motif in the shop. I love my haircut and get compliments everyday! I even referred a friend to her who also had an amazing dye job done. I have finally found my hair salon for the duration of my stay in Chicago!!!!
