The email advertising, for the super sale ... this company presents for the consumer, in my opinion, sounders promising. A number of times I've shopped this establishment when I was not concerned of, for the most part, for the quality that comes with some, not all, name brand, products because of price. The sale, again my opinion, was not impressive at all, lower quality products at that are not at all worth what you're paying. Check-out lines were very excessive for the savings on lower quality products. I believe, my opinion only again, their marketing messages and advertising messages, which are successful by the way, get you in the doors and produce a frenzy atmosphere. When the frenzy atmosphere kicks in, human, value vs quality becomes null and void and the buying begins creating a need it mentally and all bets are off! For this I completely commend this company strategy, very successful...
I'm being a bit harsh with my 1 star rating but I don't like the Ole, get em in the door and it will be to embarrassing to leave without at least something in your hand, good job! Overall they have some cool, useful, and fun products at reasonable prices but just keep in mind... quality is not something to expect at this company.
In retrospect they deserve a 3 star rating because of the customer...
Read moreThis place USED to be an amazing one stop shop for all your outdoors needs at great prices with high quality gear (had a starter backpackibg tent i used for years). the staff USED to be really knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly (Rhett).
However in the last few years their gear has seriously dropped in quality where I can't trust most of it to last more then one trip. I had one of their brand tents (6 man) that I've had to have replaced 3 times in less then 3 months because of defects. And frankly I need to return it again because I discovered the stuff sack was ripped as soon as I unrolled it.
Their staff have become basically useless bumbs who sit behind the counter with very little gear or outdoor knowledge (think surfer bros in Chaco's).
The Salt Lake store USED to be great but the girl manager they brought in a few years ago is a sorry excuse for a manager. Not personable at all, difficult, and frankly rude. She reminds me of the worst manager I had back when I worked retail in high school.
I'm giving it three stars. Two because you can occasionally still find good deals. One star because for the most part their warranty policy is...
Read moreFormerly an Army/Navy store Recreation Outlet retains some of the value of its original retail genre with off brand deals on everything from backpacking stoves and backpacks, to sleeping bags and tents. REI, however, this is not. While it is true you will see major industry leading brands like Big Agnes, MSR, and Gregory to name a few throughout the store, there is also a large selection of items from brands I have never heard of. If you are bargain hunting for novelty, mostly nonessential camping and backpacking item then make the stop. The climbing gear selection, I must admit, was extremely limited and recognized industry leading brands were nearly non-existent with exception of a few Mammut items. Some of the items that pleasantly took me by surprise, however were Esbit Stoves, Falcon Guides, cheap off brand gas canisters, bear mace, dry boxes, cheap general use tarps, SOL Bivy, various MSR maintenance and repair kits. Organization seems to be a semi foreign word here, but don't be over whelmed by the clutter; there are hidden treasures...
