My husband and I stayed in this ryokan on our honeymoon trip to Japan and I can't recommend it enough! Everything was cozy and great, and Yoko and her husband were always kind and welcoming, no matter the time of day. The room was spacious and even had a balcony area, and we were welcomed back to our room with tea and a sweet every day. My husband and I don't speak Japanese, and that was no problem here. Yoko went out of her way to give us recommendations and tips on things to do around the ryokan.
Two of the best parts were the baths and the food. The meals here were some of the best we've had during our entire 3 weeks in Japan. Yoko served us an entirely pescatarian dinner because my husband and I are both pescatarian at home, and each small dish was beautifully presented and delicious. There was so much variety, and it was all high quality. As for the baths, typically in Japanese ryokans or hotels, onsens and baths are single gender. Here, there were two private baths, and each day Yoko asked us what time in the evening we would like to reserve our hour of time. It was incredible because my husband and I could enjoy the bath together like a private couples spa - there was even a beer vending machine to use! It was very relaxing and I would say I felt right at home, but it was even cozier then home.
Even though Miyajima is out of the way from central Hiroshima, the train and the tram make it easy to get there for a day trip (though if you have the JR pass, the train is way faster). We loved staying on the island though, because we were able to beat the crowds to see the shrines and climb mt. Misen. The mornings on the island were so peaceful!
I will be recommending this ryokan to everyone I talk to about our trip to Japan. Thanks Yoko and your family for making it such a memorable and...
Read moreRyoso Kawaguchi was a fantastic Ryokan experience. The location was close to all the main shops and restaurants in the nearby area. It's also very close to the Itsukushima Shrine and a good place to start one of the many hikes on the island.
We were greeted by a contientious, helpful and cheerful woman who checked us in and got us acquainted with our surroundings. She let us borrow umbrellas whens needed also. She was insightful and she had many suggestions. The rest of the staff were just as enthusiastic.
Our room was quite large, it was clean, it had a small seatong area that overlooked the small garden, the tatami beds were extremely comfortable, you can easily pass out in them, especially after a private soak in one of the two beautiful baths/spas. Our room also had a private toilet and sink attached which made getting ready for the day a breeze.
A kettle was provided, along with some cookies and green tea. There was a TV which we never used. Yukatas (lighter kimonos) were provided along with the sleeve for when it gets cold.
The dinner was fantastic, it was unique, beautiful, and an amazing experience. It consisted of several courses and I honestly never wanted it to end. They were very accommodating towards my partners aversion to eating meat, they had options which were selected before hand for different meal requests and types.
There were two types of breakfasts (western or Japanese style. We opted for Japanese, and it was delicious. Im confident that the Western style breakfast was equally as good. From what I saw. It also looked great.
Overall, I would highly recommend this Ryokan to all friends and family, especially to go for their beautiful dinner. My whole experience there was one that I will never forget from my...
Read moreRyoso Kawaguchi is a wonderful traditional ryokan with amazingly friendly hosts and staff. We walked from the ferry both ways because the weather was nice and it was only a 10-minute walk, but the hosts provided their phone number to call for being picked up. Yoko Kawaguchi and her husband greeted us warmly, showed us our room, the dining room, and the private bath. The room was traditional, spacious, well equipped, and had a small balcony with a table and chairs overlooking a beautiful small garden. We signed up for the dinners and breakfasts with our reservation and were delighted with the delicious and varied meals, beautiful garden off the dining room, and helpful and friendly server, Kiyoki Kuroda. The dinners and breakfasts were as good or better than any meals we had in our 10-day trip to Kyushu and Miyajima, and we ate at several high end restaurants in Fukuoka. Kiyoki became our impish friend, making each meal both fun and delicious. He provided assistance and humor but never intruded on our privacy. Yoko was clearly in charge at all times, making sure our needs were met and providing friendly and helpful advice about things to do on the island. She scheduled our meals and private time in the Japanese bath. At the end of the day, the soak in the warm bath guaranteed a good night's sleep. We only stayed two nights and regretted not having longer to spend in Miyajima with our hosts when we left. We enthusiastically recommend this beautiful ryokan to anyone...
