We had the absolute pleasure of spending seven nights at Lucky Bay as a family of four, and it truly felt like a home away from home. Mohammed is the kind of host you rarely come acrossâwarm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making sure his guests are happy. His motto? âIf youâre happy, Iâm happy.â And he means it.
The location is unbeatableâjust 20 to 30 meters from the beach and about 40 meters from the main street, filled with cozy bars, local restaurants, and shops. Despite its central spot, itâs wonderfully peaceful at night, ensuring restful sleep after a day in the sun.
The entrance to the rooms is simply magical: a sandy path winding through lush greenery that feels like a miniature botanical garden. Everything is immaculately keptâpaths raked daily, a basin with water to rinse off sandy feet, and even a touch of incense to welcome you each evening. The hammock by the porch adds a relaxed, surfy vibe that perfectly fits the spirit of Arugam Bay.
The rooms are comfortable and cool, thanks to both air conditioning and a ceiling fan. The bed is cozy and comes with a mosquito net, just in case. The bathroom is simple but functionalâexactly what you need after a day on the beach.
One of the most heartwarming touches: almost every day, Mohammed would surprise us with a delicious homemade treat prepared by his family. Itâs these small, thoughtful gestures that make a stay truly memorable.
Thank you, Mohammed, for your outstanding hospitality. Lucky Bay is a hidden gem and an absolute must-stay...
Read moreThe rooms are nice and cozy but lack unfortunately of a fridge. Also it needs to be mentioned that thereâs no cleaning service inside the room so better be tidy ;). Also make sure that you donât leave any food in the room otherwise youâll find them a couple of minutes later covered with ants.
Apart of this the host was super friendly and helpful. Furthermore the location of lucky bay is great. The beach is 30 seconds away and there are various restaurants and supermarkets in walking distance too. The host brought us every day home made sweets by his mother which was a very nice gesture.
BUT if youâre looking for a good nights sleep so that you can catch the waves at 5.30am this might not be the ideal place for you. The walls and the windows arenât well isolated therefore everything thatâs going on outside can be heard inside the room very clearly (loud guests/firework/morning prayers). Especially if thereâs a group of âpartying guestsâ itâs quite upsetting. The host does tell the guests in question the next day that itâs not ok, but if it is noisy again the following night, this usually remains without consequence. To the regret of the guests, who are extremely bothered by this (various complaints from several guests).
Thanks...
Read morePerfect location between the main road and the beach and just next door to one of Arugamâs best surf camps. Itâs three to four minutes walk to the âcenter-centerâ, so still quiet at night during party season.
Each of the just five rooms/bungalows comes with a covered terrace, hammock, air con and fan which is very convenient for rainy but also for really hot days. The rooms themselves are nothing special but have all you need.
However, the best at Lucky Bay is Mohammed who owns this place with his mother and who is taking care of it 24/7 to provide a great experience. He is super helpful and probably the only person in Sri Lanka who does not take commissions:
We asked Mohammed for surf lessons and he booked the best for a really good price. We asked Mohammed for a taxi to Trinco and he organized the nicest driver we had in Sri Lanka (you should ask if Sajahan is available! ;) ) for a fare 5,000 Rs below the pick me price.
Staying here is highly recommended. The rooms are just missing some attention to detail to really make this stay the perfect experience. Just let Mohammed know whatâs missing and Iâm sure he will organize it when the...
