An employee informed me that the owners take credit card processing fees from employee tips. Talk about cheap! This place is already overpriced, but instead of eating that as the cost of business, they take it from underpaid employees.
Also, I noticed the owner didn't reply to my rebuttal. I had this same conversation with an employee, who told me everything I said is accurate.
REPLY TO OWNER:
Beer: Higher on some, lower on others? You are definitely higher on almost everything. You price by the unit. I've priced out a six pack that would cost $15 here, while the same thing at a grocery store is $12.
Grill: Slight increase? One example, the double burger went from $6 to $8 a couple years ago, now $12. 12-8/8 = 50% increase. That is not slight at all.
Cork fee: Not just a bar or taproom? Then what else are you? John's is not a full service restaurant. Pouring into a glass ensures people are of legal age? No, checking their ID does. "Making sure they paid"? A receipt does that. "Enjoyed in a proper glass"? You have 2 beer glasses, hardly a selection. I understand the fee helping to pay for other items and I think that is the real reason along with extra profit. I disagree that most bottle shops have a cork fee. I've been to several without any.
You are a business, not a charity, and in it for profit. I get that. I'm not mad at any business for wanting to make money. What I don't like is being nickeled and dimed.
I will give 3 stars. Good location given that the store is much smaller than Multnomah.
John's prices have always been on the high side since it is a specialty store. They charge by the bottle, so it is definitely more expensive than a grocery store, albeit with a larger selection.
I think the food is very overpriced what you get. I remember one of the ladies at Multnomah a couple years ago said that the supplier really jacked up the costs, so the owners had to raise their prices. Did they look for another supplier? For the small size, I can't justify the cost, so I no longer buy them.
The biggest thing that honestly upsets me they did is charging a cork fee to open a can. It literally takes 1-2 seconds to open it, yet it costs $1. I had one employee at Multnomah tell me "are you going to stress over that?" Ummm yeah considering it is literally nothing but free money for the owner. I have only been to one other place with a cork fee. I don't go there anymore. John's claims the cork fee is due to increased costs, yet they had enough money to open the Beaverton store. Hence the cork free is just extra pocket money.
I only go here every few months. Decent selection, overpriced food, and I hate the cork fee. Otherwise It's fine.
I'm sure if the brothers reply it will be something like "thanks for your business!" or something like that. Please get rid of the cork fee and I may come here more often. And no brothers, most bars and taprooms do not...
Read moreHAD TO STOP AT WALMART AFTER BUYING STUFF HERE. I really wanted to like this place because it’s a cool concept and local but I just can’t with the prices for basic beers you can find at any grocery store. Of course if you want some high end beers this is your place which is definitely me on some occasions. A lot of nickel and dimingh here though. For instance the seltzers I bought were $2.29/each and they won’t even sell you a normal case that they come in. Same case at Walmart is $17.49 for 12. Breaks down to $1.45 approximately each. That’s almost a 60% mark up. Ridiculous! I get you’re a business and not a corporate chain but the whole point of a business is to compete, especially with these products. So you can’t make the excuse that you’re not a corporate chain and expect everyone to just agree to pay you these insane mark ups. I get prices go up and what not but I can’t justify paying that much more for these type of products. I get people like to mix and match drinks but that doesn’t justify that much of a price increase either. Will most likely buy my expensive beers here but nothing else. This has nothing to do with the review but just found it hilarious at check out they still decided to add a section to leave a tip before paying… like what???? lol
RESPONSE TO “owner” No need to get upset man, we all have our opinions. I just feel bad because instead of finding a solution, it seems you have only excuses for everything. But best...
Read moreI have to say that John’s market place has an outstanding selection of beer to purchase. They also have a nice selection of siders and wines. There is a lovely patio area and an indoor dining area. If you are going to John’s to purchase beverages, they are a five-star location. If you are going there to eat, well, good luck to you. You start off ordering at the countertop. When we ordered, my husband asked if he could get mustard, she was having a burger. There was a little confusion as to whether or not, they have mustard. I decided to go simple and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon. Eventually we were called and went to pick up our food. The mustard still seem to present a problem. Then I asked for salt and pepper again there was confusion. Eventually, the bartender went into the back and came out with three plastic sauce, containers containing salt, pepper, and mustard. I sat down to eat my grilled cheese sandwich and I could see there was the end of a piece of bacon sticking out, that was the only piece of bacon. My husband did like his hamburger once he got some mustard on it. The salad was okay. Basically this is a place to drink and they have a few eats and apparently a lack of condiments. Come for the beer and go elsewhere...
