BVA Mercantile — Local services in Bedford

I was introduced to BVA Mercantile in 2023 during a short trip to the Bedford, VA area. Everything was lovely, especially the home décor items, which make wonderful gifts. I ended up purchasing so much that the owner, Christie Wiley, kindly offered to ship it all to my home in Chicago. Since then, I have been back to Bedford several times and always make it a point to visit BVA Mercantile. The shop always looks fresh, and is stocked with adorable goods and beautiful home décor. Not to mention, some dynamite custom furniture pieces crafted by Christie’s husband, Steve.

The staff are super friendly and welcoming to everyone who walks through their door. They chat up everyone who comes in. They are helpful when needed and content to let you look around at your leisure. Christie, Sarah, and Emma are such a ray of sunshine and kindness, and I am always glad to see them when I am visiting the area.

Evidently todays staff was not the norm.. . My Wife and I stopped by just to check it out. Candles and Nick naks everywhere. A mother and her young daughter were in there at the same time. The little girl asked where the bathroom was and the girl running the place they said they "didn't have one and if you go to the end of the road you'll find one somewhere." The tone of voice is what really got my attention. That mother handled it better than I would have. When you have children, things like this matter. The girl working could've handled that differently. I doubt the mother will go back. I know my wife and I will not be going back.

Find it very interesting how yesterday they had only 17 reviews. I give a bad one for reasons above. And then this morning they've received 24 more reviews since last night. Obviously the owner got upset at their first bad review and asked everyone they know to leave one. Look at the time line on them. Over half of the reviews in one night.

Anyways, go check them out. And don't ask...

This Christmas, I was looking for a few last-minute items and had heard so many positive things about BVA I decided to check it out. The store is beautifully decorated, and the merchandise is so charming. I really enjoyed getting to browse their selection and take in the calming setting they have created. The sweet young lady working the counter kindly greeted each person who entered, seeming to have a personal connection with many of the customers she took time to ask about their family and shared how hers was doing. Sadly, small town shops are disappearing and being replaced by stores that don't know their customers and community. That is not the case at BVA, and I can not applaud them enough for the charm and caring nature their beautiful store has brought to Bedford. If ever anyone says otherwise, you may want to consider...
