Growing pains, or start up jitters?
I don't know but when I went in at 3:30 today I was told that I could only get takeout. When I went inside to get takeout I was told that that wasn't true that they were open until 4:00 and I could go sit and they would serve me or I could sit at the bar or I could do takeout. This by one of the owners. I decided to do takeout, as much as I wanted to just sit read a book and have a hot pastrami sandwich I decided I could do that over it the Bayfront and have a nicer ambiance.
Even though the restaurant was not real busy, it took a while for me to get my sandwich and I had to tell the takeout server that I wanted mustard to go with it and utensils which would not have been there had I not asked and I don't know how they expected me to eat potato salad if not digging at it with my fingers which I haven't done since I was three. I drove over to the park, a few minutes away, and was looking forward to my meal. I was terribly disappointed when the sandwich, which was piled high with pastrami, had bread that was dry as if it was day old, and the pastrami itself was dry, not the moist, pleasant pastrami that I'm used to from a Jewish deli. I don't normally put mayonnaise on a pastrami sandwich but felt I had to do something to give this some moisture.
Perhaps I'm too picky having gone to cooking schools in both Madrid and Thailand, but they should do better.
I give them a generous three stars hoping that this is just growing pains. If it's not, perhaps I'll be able to update later. There wasn't enough for me to say to myself "Yeah, I'll give it another...
Read moreI was excited for this to open. I have read good and bad things.
They just reopened after a disaster of an original opening and shut down. They overstaffed intending to correct the problem.
I came in yesterday during lunch to eat. The food was so/so. A few items were very good and a few things were very bad.
This place will not be in business in 2 years with the Management here. Nobody seems to know what they are doing.
The expo/kitchen is absolute chaos and there were only a few tables outside.
While looking over the desserts in the refrigerated cases I observed 2 overly abusive older Managers talking to the staff like they were dogs in full view of myself 8 feet away.
Insult upon insult upon insult.
I asked a staffer if they were the Owners and he said no. It was a business partner named Sol or Sal that was out of control.
I will never come back to this place again. It was an awful experience. Not just the food but the way that they treat their guests and workers.
I spoke with one worker, I'm not sure what their position is but they absolutely...
Read moreWe were occasional patrons of the original Rascal House, and nothing can compare with that! However, we sat at the bar in the ‘new’ Rascal House named section. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. We chose to order and sit at the bar. We shared the Manhattan size (10oz) hot corned beef sandwich ($23) which was piled high with corned beef, enough to make another whole sandwich! The corned beef was spectacular and the bread was delicious! I had to have Matzoh Ball soup, because I remembered it so fondly from the old days, so we also shared a bowl of that ($12) - this soup is only available in that size. (I could swear they had a smaller version at the Rascal House on Collins, which was what I was looking for.) This was a very large bowl of soup which would suffice as a lunch on its own. I’ll probably skip the soup next time - not that it wasn’t good, but the sandwich was the star. I’m going for a Reuben next time, and I’ll bet my husband will go for pastrami - perhaps Sarasota size (6oz) just because. The hot corned beef...
