Tempura Matsui's 10th Anniversary Menu 🍤 | A Mixed Bag
📍 Tempura Matsui (NYC) Back in 2018, my friends and I left thinking, "If this is one-star, Taipei’s Botan should be two." Well... Botan now has two stars, and Matsui? Still solid but not stellar. Compared to its sister shop Ichika in Hawaii, Matsui’s tempura leans heavier and less nuanced—yet in NYC’s limited tempura scene, it remains a go-to. 🍽️ 10th Anniversary Menu Hits & Misses 🥩 Wagyu Tempura Expected thin slices, got a whole fried hunk of beef. Too oily—not ideal for tempura. 🦀 King Crab + Hamo Crab = sweet, delicate, with rich roe. But the Hamo (pike eel)? So. Many. Bones. 😖 🍤 "Sorry" Squid Tempura (Compensation for the bones!) Crispy outside, chewy-soft inside—accidental highlight! 💸 Disappointments: Uni & Abalone Tempura are now add-ons (extra $$$). No lobster tempura this season. 💡 Verdict: Skip the anniversary menu—wait for August’s refresh. Tempura fans—agree or disagree?
