Due to the transatlantic slave trade and Haitian Vodou, the word was given new meaning. Vodou is a religion that blends African, Caribbean cultures, and Catholic beliefs. In Vodou, committing a serious crime, such as selling land that does not belong to oneself in Haiti, is met with a punishment worse than death by an organization called bizango, which is zombification. Sorcerers ("bokor") cast curses and poison their victims, bury them alive, then dig them up and force them to take poison, turning them into slaves of the bokor. When the bokor dies, these zombies gradually regain their consciousness without the poison and wander the roads... The word "zombie" appeared in Europe in 1697 in the novel "Le Zombi du grand Pérou" by French author Paul-Alexis Blessebois. However, the modern zombie culture truly began to take shape after the United States occupied Haiti in 1915, followed by the use of the term "zombie" in the 1932 film "White Zombie," after which zombies gradually joined the ranks of Western horror creatures. #France #Paris #QuaiBranlyMuseum #Museum #Zombies #Vodou
