Located in the heart of Paris, between the Louvre and the Pompidou Center, the building has undergone many transformations. Its southern façade adjoins the remains of the Catherine de' Medici Palace, with a giant towering column that has stood over the city since 1578. The building was destroyed and became a wheat exchange hall in 1767. This innovative building became a masterpiece of the Enlightenment period, with its circular form reflecting ancient architectural inspiration and the pursuit of utopian architectural styles at the end of the 18th century. Since 1812, it has been adorned with a splendid metal dome, unprecedented in scale at the time. For the World Exposition, the building was renovated in 1889 and, along with the Eiffel Tower, became one of the most remarkable achievements, officially becoming the "Paris Commodity Exchange". Later, Japanese architect Tadao Ando transformed the building in a contemporary architectural style, creating a dialogue between the building and its historical context, heritage and contemporary creations, past and present. The renovation project of the former Paris Commodity Exchange is currently the most significant architectural project undertaken by Mr. Tadao Ando in France. The architect chose to insert another circular form within the circular building. This clear, elegant, and radical concrete cylinder connects all exhibition spaces, reorganizing the flow of visitors within the museum.
