🇩🇪 Half-Day Trip to the Charming Town of Bamberg

In June, I spent two days exploring Bamberg, Naumburg, and Eisenach. As long as you avoid high-speed trains and the northern regions, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is pretty reliable! 🚆✨ Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture—untouched by major renovations or wartime bombing. Once the domain of the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg, it now belongs to the state of Bavaria. 🏰🍃 Like Naumburg Cathedral, Bamberg Cathedral is a classic German Romanesque-Gothic church featuring dual choirs and four towers. (The earliest examples of this design in Germany are the two World Heritage-listed churches in Hildesheim, in north-central Germany: St. Michael’s Church and St. Mary’s Cathedral, both built in the 11th century.) Inside the cathedral, you’ll find the exquisite 13th-century stone sculpture known as the Bamberg Rider 🏇—alongside Naumburg’s Uta, it’s considered one of the great embodiments of idealized human figures from medieval Germany. The East Gate is flanked by sculptures of Adam and Eve, saints, and angels. Above the North Gate, a dramatic Last Judgment is carved into the tympanum—the devil’s face is incredibly expressive! 😈 On either side, saints and sinners are depicted, with the tormented souls on the right almost losing their form from agony. It seems medieval artists were truly skilled at portraying demons and villains! 😮‍💨👹 #StudyInGermany #Bamberg #TravelGermany #WorldHeritage 🇩🇪❤️
