π«π· France | A Hidden Gem of a Fashion Museum Worth Visiting
Paris is truly a city of museums and art galleries. In addition to the traditional ones categorized by era or collection type, as a place renowned for its fashion, it naturally has museums dedicated to fashion, like the YSL (Yves Saint Laurent Museum). When I was in Paris, I stumbled upon it and out of curiosity, I inquired about entry. To my surprise, my ICOM card was accepted! It was a rare opportunity, so I went in for a visit. Nearby, you'll also find the contemporary art museum Palais de Tokyo and the MusΓ©e de la Mode. If you're interested in modern art and fashion, you can easily combine these museums into a single day's itinerary. π¨ The YSL Museum in Paris is one of only two museums in the world dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent, the other being in Marrakech, Morocco, which also opened in 2017. Unfortunately, when I visited Marrakech earlier this year, the museum was in the middle of changing its exhibits, so I missed out on the opportunity to visit. The Paris YSL Museum, however, is housed in a former haute couture atelier where Saint Laurent's creations were born from 1974 to 2002, spanning nearly 30 years of his work. πΊ The museum spans three floors and not only introduces Saint Laurent's life but also displays many of his haute couture designs and sketches from various periods. Upstairs, there's a projection room showcasing years of runway shows and a recreation of Saint Laurent's studio, giving visitors a glimpse into the creative process of this fashion master. πΌοΈ Currently, until May 4th, the museum is hosting a special exhibition called "YSL and Flowers." Influenced by Dior, Saint Laurent was also a lover of flowers (and interestingly, the French word for lily, "lys," is a rearrangement of the letters YSL). He believed flowers were an endless source of inspiration and used floral motifs to adorn women as a tribute to their beauty. The exhibition features over 30 pieces of clothing and paintings, showcasing various ways flowers are represented in fashion, such as through embroidery and prints. πΈ Although the YSL Museum is not included in the Paris Museum Pass, if you're interested in the history of fashion and trends, it's definitely worth adding to your Paris itinerary to experience the allure of fashion. π β° Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 11:00 - 18:00 (Closed on Mondays, extended hours until 21:00 on Thursdays) π« Admission: 10 euros (Students: 7 euros, ICOM card holders: Free) π Transportation: Take Line 9 of the Metro to Alma - Marceau station, exit 2, and it's a 2-minute walk. β° Suggested Visit Duration: 1 hour π Tips: The Paris Museum Pass is not accepted here.
