🇮🇩｜Hidden Gem Travel in Medan

This trip to Medan turned out to be a wonderful surprise. I didn’t plan much—just went for the cheap flights. Five days, four nights, with the first four days on a chartered tour. ✈️ 🐎345 (bought last minute) 🏨 & 🚗 🐎680 (4D3N package including 8 meals❗️) 💵 Extra cash for the last day of free-and-easy exploring + food Travel insurance 🐎65 Pro tip: For places like Lake Toba, definitely book a chartered car—the roads are rough, super dark at night, and the mountain paths are narrow and winding. I found the car rental on Google—the fee covered hotels, car rental, driver, driver’s accommodation, fuel, ferry tickets, etc. The driver was a local Batak who only spoke Bahasa and a little English. After paying a deposit via WhatsApp and settling the rest in cash on the last day, we were good to go. The driver’s skills were impressive, though not the most patient—lots of honking along the way. You get used to it 😅. Package included: Day 1 Medan → Parapat (Lake Toba) Stay overnight in Parapat Day 2 Parapat → Samosir Island & Berastagi (volcano) & Sipiso-piso Waterfall Day 3 Berastagi → Pasar Buah Brastagi (fruit market) & Pariban Hot Spring (bring swimwear, towel, dry clothes!) Returned to Medan for lunch, checked into the hotel, rested, then headed out for dinner. Day 4 Medan (+1 extra night) Free-and-easy day Topui Bakmi (delicious pork noodles 😋) Hao Di Lao (Haidilao hotpot—amazing service!) Kede Bubur (Hainanese chicken porridge—pricey) Alligator Roastery (coffee spot—try the Dirty Pistachio!) Side note: Chinese food here is surprisingly expensive! Day 5 Medan Breakfast at Kedai Kopi Apek before heading to the airport Souvenirs to bring home: MERANTI CHEESE SWISS ROLL CAKE AMBON (tapioca cake) KAI XIN PAO (steamed buns) The most important thing about travel? Keep expectations low.
