This afternoon, I visited GorĂ©e Island, a tiny speck in the Atlantic just 3km off Dakar’s coast. This UNESCO World Heritage Site hides a harrowing past: ⚓ The Island’s Dark History For centuries, GorĂ©e was a slave trade hub. Enslaved Africans—men, women, children—from across the continent were trafficked here, then shipped globally. The term “sold like pigs” takes on grim reality here. Heartbreaking, isn’t it? 😔 🌈 Today: A Beacon of Resilience Now, the island’s pastel-colored houses and sunny streets mask its trauma.
