To the west, it's bordered by the Parliament House, to the east by Helsinki Central Station, and to the north by Finlandia Hall. 🏙️This museum serves as an "art forum," open and flexible for various stage events, performances, dances, music, and seminars. The café on the ground floor, adjacent to the garden and lobby, is perfectly suited for informal activities such as poetry readings and "roundtable" discussions. The lecture hall is equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment, and its back facade made of continuous glass allows passersby to see the interior from the external path. The name Kiasma comes from the Greek word "chiasma," meaning "crossing." It represents the crossing of nerves and the twisted way chromosomes are intertwined. Crossing and twisting are integral parts of Kiasma's architecture. On one hand, the design concept stems from the interplay between the architectural composition and the geometric forms of the city and landscape. An axis in the form of a curve connects the museum, Finlandia Hall, and the Tyrö Bay. On the other hand, the design offers multiple opportunities for spatial crossings. The main feature of the exhibition space is the intersection of two tall concrete walls, providing a serene yet dynamic backdrop for contemporary art displays. Stairs and ramps meander throughout, leading visitors from one level to another. Kiasma is flanked by water pools on both sides, connected by a series of water cascades that flow along the passage through the building. Additionally, the interior uses yellow, red, black, and white plywood. The plywood wall of the Kiasma Theater is painted Pompeii red, while the lobby walls and doors use yellow plywood, adding color and liveliness to the space. This museum itself has become art, offering visitors a constantly changing perspective through its architectural design.
