A Charming Small Town In Upstate NY Just Became A Film Set For A New Sci-Fi Romance
A picturesque stretch of downtown Cortland, New York just had its big Hollywood moment. The Crown City’s newly renovated Main Street was transformed into a film set this summer, where crews wrapped filming on an upcoming **sci-fi romance movie titled *Trying to Seem*, [according to X101](https://www.wxhc.com/production-company-to-film-at-several-locations-in-city-of-cortland-for-upcoming-film/). The independent feature, produced by Waterloom Productions out of Portland, Maine, follows a young woman from the future who discovers human emotion after falling in love. City officials said the story explores the relationship between technology and humanity — with Cortland’s small-town charm as its backdrop. The filming took place between July 31st and August 15th, with scenes shot around Tompkins Street between Main Street and Reynolds Avenue, as well as 41 Tompkins St., a grand mansion now home to SUNY Cortland students. One of the most iconic backdrops? The 1890 House Museum, a historic mansion once owned by the wealthy Wickwire family. The museum temporarily closed to tours for three weeks while cameras rolled inside — a rare opportunity to see the Gilded Age landmark on screen. Local officials managed traffic detours and temporary no-parking zones during the two-week shoot, but Mayor Scott Steve said the excitement outweighed the inconveniences. > “It’s exciting to see our city featured on screen,” said Mayor Steve. “We’re thrilled to welcome Waterloom Productions to Cortland and showcase the unique character and beauty of our community.” The film’s location manager also partnered with local restaurants and businesses for catering and services, giving the city’s economy a boost while production was in town. Upstate NY’s cinematic moment ----------------------------- Cortland isn’t the only place getting Hollywood treatment these days.
