A must-visit attraction in Portugal! Jerónimos Monastery! 🏰✨

I only went on one trip this year, covering 2 countries and 4.5 cities in 2 weeks. Lisbon has been a favorite itinerary, definitely worth visiting twice! 🇵🇹👣 The monastery was built in the 1500s, originally used by the nobility for funerals, and it later evolved into a religious sanctuary where people prayed for sailors about to leave the country. The great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 leveled most of the city, but this monastery was one of the few buildings that stood tall amidst the ruins. 🌪️🏛️ It has preserved its details very well, with a design concept resembling an underwater palace, featuring elements like fishing ropes, which is quite unique. 🌊🧵 Here’s a famous delicacy — the Portuguese egg tart! The world’s first egg tart was invented right here. The nuns opened a shop next door to sell them. Back then, the monks didn’t have irons, so they used proteins to smooth out their robes. The leftover yolks inspired the nuns to invent the famous Portuguese egg tart! 🥧🧡 Postscript: Personally, I find KFC’s egg tarts tastier, with a subtle egg flavor, similar to a cheese tart. They’re not bad, but not my favorite either. (KFC’s tarts have no relation to the authentic Portuguese egg tart.) #belém #lisboa #lisbon #jerónimosmonastery
