A Place of Hope Rising from the Ashes (1)π
In the 2001 "9γ»11" terrorist attacks, the collapse of World Trade Center Tower Two led to the destruction of the original St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. π’π After negotiations with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America was granted permission to rebuild the church at the eastern end of the new Liberty Park, above the World Trade Center Vehicle Security Center, with restrictions on location, size, and load - bearing capacity. π’πDesigned by Santiago Calatrava, the church is elevated about 25 feet above street level and features a stone - clad structure. The exterior consists of four stone - clad towers with square floor plans, surrounding a central drum - shaped dome covered with thin stone / glass laminates that emit light at night. π’π The dome's forty - faceted multi - panel design echoes that of the Hagia Sophia dome; the towers are covered with white and gray marble stripes, inspired by the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora, Turkey. #NewYork #StNicholasGreekOrthodoxChurch ππ
