A Practical Guide to Kathmandu & Pokhara
Preface: If you’re not super confident, just rely on courage—I’ve tested it: you can totally get by in Nepal without speaking English! ✈️ Arriving in Kathmandu Airport Essentials: After security, there are currency exchange counters and SIM card kiosks inside. The SIM card seller speaks Chinese—7 days of unlimited data costs about ¥25, and they’ll set it up for you. Getting to Thamel: Taxis are available right outside the airport exit (right side). To Thamel, they’ll quote around 900 NPR—remember to ask for an “air-conditioned car.” I took a “black taxi” after walking out of the airport, and it cost 800 NPR. First Impressions: Kathmandu’s dust, traffic jams, and exhaust are intense. Always keep a mask handy—you’ll need it everywhere! 💰 Currency Exchange Tips Kathmandu: Recommend “Jiangnan Pharmacy” (¥1,005 = 19,000 NPR). Avoid “Chengdu Restaurant” (worse rates). Pokhara: “Peace Restaurant” has Chinese-speaking staff (¥1,500 = 28,200 NPR). Pro Tip: Exchange rates in Pokhara are generally lower than in Kathmandu. Exchange more in Kathmandu to save hassle. 🚗 Transportation Hack: inDrive Registration: Requires a local phone number. Message me if you need help downloading it (took me ages to figure out!). Vehicle Options: Motorbike taxis: Best for short distances—fast and flexible. Non-AC cars (jokingly called “chili fish head cars”): Cheap but may have frequent stops, which can cause motion sickness. AC cars: More expensive but clean and spacious—great for long trips. Communication Trick: Drivers will call to confirm your location. I often handed the phone to a nearby local to explain where I was—it works! ✈️ Kathmandu → Pokhara Transfer Cheaper Flights: Ask your hotel owner or receptionist to book via the official website. It’s cheaper than Ctrip, includes insurance, and I paid ~¥450 for a large plane (worried about small planes). Airport Note: Kathmandu’s international and domestic airports are separate but only a 10-minute walk apart—no panic if you mix them up. Pokhara Airport Taxis: Apps won’t work inside the airport. Walk left along the road to find taxis outside. Fun fact: The airport and roads here were built by Chinese teams—impressive infrastructure! 📌 More to Come Accommodation, food, and bars… I’ll share when I’m not lazy! #Kathmandu #Thamel #NepalTravel #Pokhara #NonEnglishTravel
