Affordable Solo Dining in San Francisco (75)
Including tax and SF Mandate: $44.90 — tip is up to you 💸💁♀️. Last week was Sea-to-Table Week, which I think was the first time they’ve held it. It’s actually a clever marketing move by a seafood company to promote their super-fresh fish — and I totally took the bait 🎣! Several restaurants participated, each creating a special dish using trout flown in directly from Norway. Some served it raw as sushi, others cooked it in creative ways 🍣🔥. The restaurant I visited prepared Pan-Seared Norwegian Trout with crispy baby potatoes, celery root remoulade, and pickled carrots 🥔🐟. The fish skin was beautifully crisp, while the flesh remained incredibly tender—almost to the point of being slightly undercooked in the center—and rich in natural oils. The salad had a tangy kick, almost like a light coleslaw 🥗. What I found most interesting was how lightly seasoned everything was — maybe to let the ingredients speak for themselves. Both the trout and potatoes were very mildly salted, letting the true flavors shine through. In fact, the salad ended up being the boldest-tasting element on the plate! Portion-wise, it was quite generous (those potatoes add up! 🥔), and I left feeling fully satisfied — and I’m not a big eater, FYI 😅. If the trout really was flown in fresh from Norway, I’d say the price felt totally worth it. The restaurant itself is spacious with plenty of seating, though the indoor area fills up quickly — reservations are recommended for dinner. Solo diners or pairs can sit at the bar, which is actually really fun — you get to dine while making eye contact with giant crabs in the tank nearby 👀🦀😂.
