Ancient Roman Astorga

💫 Without a doubt, Astorga is one of the most important places on the pilgrimage route. It is located at the crossroads of two French routes and the Silver Way (Via de la Plata). According to early documents, Astorga had 25 shelters during the Middle Ages. 🏰✨ 🔆 During the Roman Empire, this area developed into a significant Roman center and later became a Christian hub. This era left behind many murals, city walls, and architectural remains, showcasing its rich history. 🎨🏛️ ⭐ The sturdy city walls not only protected the residents but also safeguarded countless pilgrims who came here. Among the most important shelters at that time were San Esteban and San Feliz, located next to the Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate). 🌞⛪ 🔸 One of Astorga's most famous landmarks is the Episcopal Palace (Palacio Episcopal), designed by Gaudí, which now houses the Museo de Los Caminos. This architectural gem is a must-visit! 🏰❤️ 🔹 Another captivating structure is the Astorga Cathedral, which began construction in 1471 and took three centuries to complete. Today, the cathedral reflects various architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. 🌟⛪ #CulturalHeritage #PilgrimageRoute #CaminoDeSantiago #SpanishPilgrimageRoute #SaintJamesWay #HistoricalArchitecture #OutdoorAdventures
