Back from Poon Hill Trek (3 Days, 2 Nights) | Ask Me Anything
A beginner-friendly Poon Hill trek recap—here’s how it went, plus tips for fellow hikers! 🗺️ 3-Day Itinerary We skipped an hour of walking by hiring a car from Pokhara to Ban Thanti (a bit above Ulleri). Day 1: Easy 3-hour uphill hike to Ghorepani. Even stopped at a small shop to buy a watermelon along the way! Stayed overnight in Ghorepani. Day 2: Woke up at 4:30 AM, set off at 5 AM to summit Poon Hill for sunrise. After breakfast, trekked ~5 hours to Tadapani, where we stayed in a cozy local homestay. Day 3: Watched Annapurna’s sunrise from a wild hillside behind our homestay (closer to the peaks than ever!). Left at 8 AM, took our time with downhill stops, and reached Ghandruk by noon. 💡 Essential Tips Gear: No need for a sleeping bag—beds are clean! But bring your own slippers—slipping into them by the fire after a long day? Pure bliss. Clothing: Recent weather is mild! For sunrise, a quick-dry layer + windbreaker suffice. I overpacked a down jacket and ended up sweating. Shoes: Waterproof ones are a must (dust is everywhere). Hikers with breathable shoes had black, grimy socks by day 2. Wet wipes: Lifesavers—trails are dusty, and these help freshen up. 🍲 Food Hacks Throat lozenges: Dry air = scratchy throats. Vitamin C tablets: Fruit is pricey, and carb-heavy meals (dal bhat, noodles) can cause constipation. I brought laxatives—so useful. Honey packets/tea bags: Adds a cozy touch to mountain tea. Salty snacks: Local shops lack ham or boiled eggs—pack some! Instant noodles with hot water? Absolute luxury up there 🤤 😐 The Downsides (Regrets) Burning season: Early forest fires left the air hazy. Snow peaks were only visible briefly in the morning. Poon Hill views: The angle for Annapurna and Dhaulagiri felt off. Sunrise was in shadow—no “golden hour” glow, just gray skies. Drought: Rhododendrons barely bloomed (only sparse red flowers). Our guide said last year, trails were carpeted in them. 😊 The Upsides (Memories) Great company—laughs kept us going! One friend even vowed to tackle ABC next time 😄 Hilarious moments: Screaming at a close encounter with a cargo horse; fleeing a rice field owner throwing stones (oops, we took photos without asking!). Travel’s all about these little joys, right? 🌹 #PoonHillTrek #NepalHiking #BeginnersGuide #PokharaAdventures
