Birmingham | Shakespeare Library
Library of Birmingham The largest public library in Europe is the Library of Birmingham, located in Centenary Square in Birmingham, the second-largest city in the UK. This new building, which cost Β£189 million, opened in 2013 and houses the entire collection of the former Central Library. It is renowned for its extensive and exquisite collection of Shakespeare works. π It is also the second-largest collection of Shakespearean literature in the world, featuring 43,000 volumes in various editions. The early folios are particularly precious, with some dating back to before 1709. The top-floor rotunda, modeled after an 18th-century study, maintains its grandeur. Important Shakespearean collections from the 18th to the 20th centuries are concentrated here. Upon arriving in Birmingham, I made a beeline for the 9th-floor Shakespeare Collection and was fortunate to see the first page of the first folio edition of Shakespeare's works. ππ Peaky Blinders Street The famous TV series "Peaky Blinders" has a poster-lined street here, which is super cool. Across the street is "The Railway" pub. π Canal Wharf After exiting the library and crossing the ICC building, you'll reach the canal walkway, lined with many cafΓ©s βοΈ and restaurants π΄, perfect for a relaxing lunch break. This area blends water features, pedestrian paths, and new office buildings, making it an excellent spot to experience Birmingham's modern development. ποΈ Victoria Square Located two blocks north of Cathedral Square, Victoria Square was once a market. After its transformation, it now presents a lush and green appearance. Surrounding the square are the Town Hall, floral clock, High Court, and beautiful fountains. It can be considered the gateway to Christchurch. π³ Birmingham Cathedral This Georgian Baroque-style cathedral features famous stained-glass windows and regularly hosts masses, events, and concerts. πΆ St. Martin in the Bull Ring This is the original parish church of Birmingham, located in the bustling Bull Ring commercial district, an excellent place to experience local culture. Above it is the Bull Ring Shopping Centre, a popular spot for locals to shop. ποΈ #UKTravel #Birmingham #ShakespeareLibrary
