🏰 Brașov Black Church 🖤

The Black Church (German: Schwarze Kirche; Romanian: Biserica Neagră; Hungarian: Fekete templom) is a renowned church in Brașov, a major city in the southeastern part of Transylvania, Romania. Built by the city's German community, it is one of the most important Lutheran churches in Romania 🏰 Historical Significance: The Black Church is one of Romania's most representative Gothic architectural monuments, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries It is a late Gothic style hall church, over 89 meters long and 38 meters wide, with a capacity of about 5,000 people. It is considered the second-largest church in Romania (the largest if not considering modern buildings) and the largest Gothic building in Southeast Europe. Due to its size, it earned the title of the largest church between Vienna and Constantinople after its construction The church got its current name after being partially damaged in a fire in 1689, which blackened its walls. The popular name "Black Church" was officially accepted in the 19th century 🔥 The Fire and Its Name: The naming of the Black Church is related to a riot-induced fire. In 1689, a riot occurred in the craftsmen's district of Brașov, and the Habsburg troops, unable to control the situation, panicked and ordered the city to be set on fire. The church's wooden structures were burned, and its stone walls were blackened by the smoke, giving it the appearance of being black from a distance, hence the name "Black Church" 🚗 Transportation: Accessible only by car, it is 1 hour and 50 minutes from Dracula's Castle and 50 minutes from Sibiu ⏱️ Opening Hours: 10:30-17:30 🎟️ Admission: Entry requires cash for a ticket priced at 25 Lei. With the ticket, you can exchange it for a free meal at a small restaurant inside (a rather unique operation) #Romania #EuropeanTravel #Balkans #Church #AncientArchitecture #Gothic #Brasov
