π California's Most Scenic Coastal Train Ride
Iβd had the Coast Starlight train on my travel wishlist for ages, and finally decided to skip the flight and take a full-day slow train from LA to SF. I was initially worried about boredom and discomfort, but to my surprise, the train was almost empty, and the views outside the window β coastal cliffs, vineyards, and redwood forests β felt like moving paintings πΌοΈ. I didnβt even want to blink! I booked an afternoon departure to catch the sunset, and the entire journey was bathed in golden light π . πΊ Outbound Trip: I chose Coach Class. The seats reclined halfway and were super spacious. I loved wandering to the observation car β its full-glass design felt like a futuristic train, and the sunlight and sea breeze made the ride incredibly relaxing. At night, with darkness outside and only the sound of the tracks and warm cabin lights, it felt oddly comforting. π½οΈ Food: Way better than expected! Meals included beef, fish, and desserts. The dining car was quiet, and the staff scheduled meal times in advance β each meal felt unique. πͺ Return Trip: I upgraded to a Roomette β a cozy private space with facing sofas by day that transformed into bunk beds at night. Drawing the curtains felt like camping in a moving tent ποΈ. The attendant even brought chocolates before bedtime β such a thoughtful touch! π The train runs parallel to Highway 1 for nearly 200 km, but itβs closer to the ocean and slower-paced, giving you a chance to truly disconnect, chat, and soak in the views. While SF was the destination, the real highlight was this unforgettable coastal train journey.
