Celebrate Mexican Independence On Staten Island: La Colmena Parade Hits Port Richmond
Mexican Independence Day falls on Tuesday, September 16th , commemorating the “Grito de Dolores” (Cry of Dolores) that marked the beginning of Mexico’s fight against Spanish rule for independence. Today, many celebrate the annual event with fireworks, music, dancing, reenactments, traditional foods, family gatherings, and of course, parades! What is La Colmena’s Mexican Independence Day Parade? ----------------------------------------------------- 2025 marks La Colmena’s Mexican Independence Day Parade ‘s fifth consecutive year bringing floats, music, folkloric dance, and local vendors to Staten Island for Mexican Independence Day. When and where is the parade held this year? -------------------------------------------- The 2025 Mexican Independence Day Parade will march along Staten Island’s Port Richmond Avenue this Sunday, September 14th . The parade will kickoff at noon and conclude around 2pm. The parade route will begin at La Colmena (Port) 774 Port Richmond Avenue and end at Bennett Street & Port Richmond Avenue. Who organizes the parade? ------------------------- La Colmena, a community-based organization that supports day laborers, domestic workers, and other low-wage immigrant workers on Staten Island, puts on the annual parade. The organization provides tools to those through education, culture, and economic development to help them advocate for themselves and their communities. La Colmena also runs the Staten Island Butterfly Effect, Staten Island L’Unicorns, and La Colmena’s Folkloric Dance Group. Can anyone join the parade? ------------------------------- Yes, anyone can get involved! Community organizations, cultural groups, local businesses and more are encouraged to march in the parade. Otherwise, New Yorkers can become a sponsor, volunteer or spectate! Due note, marchers and volunteers must sign-up.
