Central Park, New York
Central Park first opened in 1857, with an initial area of 778 acres (315 hectares). 🌳 In 1858, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won the design competition for the park’s expansion with their “Greensward Plan.” Construction began that year, and parts of the park were opened to the public the following year. 🌿 During the Civil War, the park was expanded northward and was completed in 1873, reaching its current size. Central Park was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1962 and is now managed by the Central Park Conservancy in partnership with the city government. 🏛️ Notable Attractions Bethesda Fountain: Built in 1873, this is one of the park’s central landmarks.
