Charleston SC | Popular BBQ Showdown 🥩🔥
Over the Christmas holiday, I visited my in-laws and continued my food journey through South Carolina! This time, based on a recommendation from a friend who works in the restaurant industry, we tried the highly talked-about Palmira Barbecue. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the irresistible aroma of smoked meat 🤤🍖. At Palmira, BBQ is sold by weight (starting at 1/2 lb). Our group of four shared: Beef cheek (so tender it melted in the mouth — the star of the meal!) Pork rib Barbacoa (braised beef, super rich and saucy — better with rice than tostadas) Pernil (roast pork) 4 delicious sides! The owner, originally from Puerto Rico, brings Latin American flair to the seasoning and smoking. While the pork rib and pernil were tasty, I still prefer Rodney Scott’s pork — it’s next-level! Palmira’s sides were a pleasant surprise too: Collard greens with a tangy-spicy kick 🌿 Firm and savory beans (not too sweet!) Ultra-cheesy Mac and cheese 🧀 Speaking of Rodney Scott’s — we revisited this gem (yes, it was featured on Chef’s Table!). Their vinegar-based sauce cuts through the richness of the pork perfectly 🐖🍗, and their double-cooked wings (smoked THEN fried) are a must-try 🍗✨.
