Chartres |Deep Leisure Tour of France
🧩Chartres, the capital of the Eure-et-Loir department in France, is a tranquil little city built on a small hill. Atop the high bluff stands the famous Chartres Cathedral, with the quiet little city lying beneath it. A river flows around the city, branching off in the city center, with residential houses built along the river. ❣️The city is extremely serene and silent. Medieval features are evident in the old houses on the old streets, such as the Queen Bertha Staircase and the Salmon House. 📖The Chartres Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres, is said to be the site of a Marian apparition. The cathedral houses the relic of the Virgin Mary's skull and serves as a pilgrimage center for Mary, being one of the important pilgrimage sites in Western Europe. 📝The Chartres Cathedral is the birthplace of French Gothic art. Construction of the cathedral began in 1145, and after a fire in 1194, it was rebuilt over 26 years. 🧐The tall nave features pointed arches, and the surrounding porches are adorned with exquisite carvings from the mid-12th century. The medieval stained-glass windows are dazzling. #France #Chartres #Cathedral #VirginMary #Pilgrimage #Gothic #CulturalSites #Travel #AwayFromUrbanNoise
