C. Portales, 14, 26001 Logroño, La Rioja, Spain 🏰 History & Architecture: The Co-Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda stands in the heart of Logroño’s old town, between Portales Street, Caballerías Street, and the Market Square. Built on the remains of an original Romanesque church, it gained collegiate status in 1435 after merging with the church of San Martín de Albelda. 16th-century construction 🏗️, with major expansions in the 17th & 18th centuries (including Baroque towers and the Chapel of the Angels). Hall-style layout with three naves of equal height, separated by grand pillars and covered with stellar ribbed vaults. Octagonal central apse 🎨, flanked by side chapels filled with artistic treasures. 🎨 Art & Highlights: Main altarpiece (1684–1688) features a genealogy of Christ, statues of St. Peter & St. Paul, and a crucifixion scene at the top. Flemish-style Virgin Mary statue (late 15th/early 16th century). A glass shrine with a small Crucifixion painting (attributed to Michelangelo!). Tomb of Bishop Pedro González del Castillo (1627), founder of the chapel. 🕰️ Towers & Legacy: Iconic Baroque bell towers 🏗️—a Riojan specialty! Four sections: square base → octagonal midsection → tapered spire. Declared a National Monument (1931) and elevated to Co-Cathedral status (1959) by Pope Paul VI. 📸 Why Visit? A stunning mix of Gothic, Renaissance & Baroque styles, plus rare artworks—all in Logroño’s historic core! #Logroño #LaRioja #SpanishArchitecture #HiddenGems #TravelSpain ⛪🍷
