Crissy Field Park by Hargreaves Jones ๐ฟ๐
๐๏ธ Project Overview Since its opening in 2001, Crissy Field has become a flagship destination in San Francisco, attracting over 1 million visitors annually. Nestled beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, this unique site was once a tidal marshโfilled in for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and later used as a military airfield. By the time it was transferred to the National Park Service, the area was a neglected wasteland of 45 acres of asphalt, miles of barbed wire, and abandoned buildings. ๐ฑ Transformation Highlights Converted into a 100-acre national park (the systemโs first urban park!) Restored 44 acres of habitat, including an 18-acre tidal marsh Challenged the "urban vs. wild" dichotomy by creating a hybrid space where culture and ecosystems thrive together Offers immersive experiences across reconstructed marshes, coastal dunes, and a rehabilitated grass airfield ๐ด Why Itโs Iconic? Today, this vibrant urban park draws locals and global travelers alike for: Hiking, biking & running along scenic trails ๐โโ๏ธ Windsurfing & kiteboarding in the bay ๐ Paragliding with Golden Gate Bridge views ๐ช Dog walking & picnics with skyline backdrops ๐๐งบ ๐ Design Impact Proves that ecological restoration can coexist with urban recreation A model for adaptive reuse of post-industrial landscapes Balances habitat preservation with public accessโno fences! ๐ธ Must-See Features West Bluff Picnic Area (best bridge views) ๐ Crissy Marsh (spot herons & egrets) ๐ฆข Historic Airfield (walk on "runway-turned-meadow") โ๏ธโก๏ธ๐ผ #EcologicalDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanRenewal #SustainableSpaces #CrissyField
