🦬 Denver Dining | Trying Hardcore Wild Game Since 1983! 🪵
When in Denver, you try the wild game — and Buckhorn Exchange is the legendary spot to do it. Since 1893 (yes, it’s that old!), this place has been serving everything from buffalo, elk, quail, game hen, to alligator tail. We went with a “when in Rome” attitude — here’s the wild rundown: 🐊 Fried Alligator Tail 👎 Bite-sized, breaded, and fried. Served with a ketchup-mustard style sauce. The texture? Chewy and tight. The aftertaste? Fishy — like the smell of a dockside market. Don’t think too hard about this one. 🦆 Quail, Duck & Game Hen Quail was the winner — juicy, with crispy skin like a roasted squab. Duck had a noticeable gamey flavor. Everything was slightly overcooked with a hint of burnt bitterness. The sauce was salty, but the garlic butter mashed potatoes? A+! 🥔 🐃 Buffalo & Elk We went medium-well with black pepper crust. Buffalo: Lean, like sirloin — not as rich as ribeye. Elk: Tangy, strong, and wild — definitely gamy, but edible if you’re open-minded. 🦌 The Vibe Is Everything The interior is a taxidermy museum — breathtaking and historic. Animal heads line the walls, preserved in stunning detail. It’s a wild, Western experience. ✅ Verdict: Glad we tried it — but wild game might be an acquired taste.
