Dishoom, London’s Cult-Favorite Indian Spot, Is Finally Opening In NYC–And It’s Bringing Its Famous House Black Daal
After months of speculation, Dishoom, a beloved London-based Indian restaurant, has confirmed it will officially open in lower Manhattan in 2026. Known for its retro Bombay café vibes and cult-favorite dishes like bacon naan rolls, black dal, and chicken ruby curry, the restaurant will mark its U.S. debut after years of fan anticipation–especially following a sold-out 2024 breakfast pop-up at Pastis. Dishoom first opened in 2010 in London’s Covent Garden, quickly earning a cult following for its stunning interiors and comforting yet elevated takes on Indian classics. Today, the brand operates over 10 restaurants across the U.K., serves 100,000+ diners a week, and employs around 2,000 people. In the summer of 2024, Dishoom tested the waters in NYC with a two-week breakfast pop-up at the French restaurant Pastis, with reservations selling out in under five minutes. Co-founder Kavi Thakrar said he’s been eyeing Manhattan since 2016, according to the *New York Times,* but now Thakrar says “the time is right.” Thakrar says the growth of South Asian communities, the rise of Indian-American chefs, and a general shift in the perception of Indian food in the U.S. has made NYC the obvious next step. And newcomes like Dhamaka, Semma, and Bungalow have helped pave the way for Dishoom’s arrival. He told the *NYT:* > There are so many young professionals, second-generation, third-generation people running businesses. Indian food is finally part of the city’s fabric. To fuel its international expansion, Dishoom recently secured £300 million in funding from L Catterton, a private equity firm backed by LVMH. While details on the NYC menu and design are still under wraps, expect the same Dishoom staples fans fly across the world for, including: * 🫓 Bacon Naan Roll * 🍛 Signature Black Dal, slow-cooked for 24 hours * 🌶️ Gunpowder Potatoes with bold spices * 🍔 Vada Pav and buttery Chicken Ruby Curry And as for the vibe, we’re expecting a transportive, cinematic homage to Bombay cafés of decades past, just reimagined for modern Manhattan. Dishoom is just one of several other London spots joining NYC’s culinary scene, including one from chef Asma Khan, behind Indian restaurant Darjeeling Express, Kricket, a spot serving Indian small plates, and fast-casual Farmer J, which has been open in London since 2014. While there’s still much more info to come surround the restaurant’s NYC expansion, one thing’s for certain: the hype is real!
