Dowling House: A Historic Old Home
šThis old house is a quite interesting historical site in downtown Galena. Though not large, itās well preserved and perfect for those who enjoy old architecture or want to quickly learn about local history. šJohn Dowling was an important early resident of Galena, elected mayor in 1841 and 1843. His limestone house was built in 1826ā27. āThe first floor was used as a trading post, while the Dowling family lived upstairs. āThe building opened to the public in the early 1970s, offering 30-minute tours from May through November. The house is furnished with period-appropriate items. šI recommend joining the guided tourāthe staff give clear and patient explanations, offering insights into early 19th-century lifestyles and architectural features. šMost of the furniture and objects in the house reflect the style of that era, making it easy to imagine life back then. šThe atmosphere is quiet, and a full visit takes about 20 minutesānot tiring at all. Itās easy to include in a trolley tour or downtown walking route. #HistoricHome #Galena #CulturalHeritage
